IMDb Movies & TV 5.0
These days, every service or product has a corresponding iPhone app. Case in point, IMDb wants to offer its full services to people on the go without forcing them to launch a browser, type in imdb.com and use the site as they would on a desktop computer.
Well optimized for all screens
The IMDb iOS app is well designed for the small screen of the iPhone, as well as for the iPad’s big display. On iPhone your content is shown nice and big so you can scan everything without too much squinting, while the iPad version displays much more without forcing you to scroll all the time.
Movies with trailers have a preview/thumbnail on iPad. This is just one of many expanded features possible because of the increased screen real estate. The options and settings menus sit quietly at the top, and disappear as you start scrolling down, being replaced by an informative banner (in case you forgot what area of IMDb you were dissecting).
Find showtimes, watch trailers, track your favs
Discovering new movies is easy with the IMDb mobile app. You get your first suggestions on the home screen, and you can begin your quest via the search bar at the top, or using the various tools that become available as you scroll further down.
You can narrow down your queries by Movies, TV and Celebrities, and you get extra perks (such as rating and watch lists) if you sign in with an IMDb account.
The photo browser is present at all times, regardless of what you’re looking for, giving you an always-on gallery of the celebrities, movie stills and behind the scenes shots available for that particular title.
Links to the Full IMDb site on name and title pages have made their way back into the app, much to everyone’s happiness. Also, the folks over at IMDb have added Technical Details and Box Office data to the movie pages.
Those of you who are always in the know about movie trivia can contribute with the data straight from the app, just like those who like watching obscure movies that somehow don’t have any plot data on file.
If you’re a fan of the IMDb site, you’ll feel right at home in the official IMDb app for iPhone and iPad. If you’re not familiar with the service, it may take a while to get accustomed to it, but the learning curve is not steep.

Bottom Line
Design / UI9
Despite looking a bit cluttered, IMDb really manages to cram all the important stuff on a single page. On iPad, these limitations are lifted and the app takes even more advantage of the bigger display. |
Function8
Has you covered with the latest movies, trailers, behind-the-scenes shots, photos of your favorite celebs and movie directors, quotes, news and reviews, even gossip. If it’s movie-related, it’s inside the IMDb app. |
Security8
Requires an Internet connection for most of its features, and it integrates with various other services. You can log in with Facebook which has its own privacy implications, of course. It also requires an IMDb account for some features. |
Battery8
Not a major issue for your iPhone, unless you’re the type who uses IMDb only for the trailers. In that case, expect drainage as with any other video player. |
Price9
Despite being free with no limitations and no in-app purchases, IMDb is very pushy with the ads it displays. |
Compatibility8
Requires iOS 7, which is always a good indication that the developer is committed to support the latest hardware and software. It’s also iPad native and takes full advantage of the bigger display area. |
Go easy on those trailers and your iDevice will thank you
