Layar 8.3.2
But the people at Layar B.V. have taken things even further. They’ve created an amazing experience where you scan print with your phone and the content displayed comes alive with extras, including trailers, photo galleries, prices, you name it. Even people’s photos can be scanned to get access to their LinkedIn profile, or other options.
Crisp UI, easy to pick up and use
As far as the visuals are concerned, Layar looks stunning! It’s got a clean layout with nothing more than a huge scanner in the middle and a few buttons here and there. You’ll instantly know what each of them does, and that’s partially thanks to the quick introductory guide. However, it may not be easy for everyone.
Look for the Layar logo, find a QR code
It may be difficult to understand how to use the app, because it requires you to scan specific stuff, not any object in sight (though we’ll probably get there in a few years). To bring Layar to life, you need to find the Layar logo on magazines, newspapers and other materials, or scan a QR code.
Magazines come alive with photo galleries and videos, while posters on the street also gain extra digital content. You can even buy tickets to a show. It’s the kind of thing that can’t be described too well with words, and we suggest you experience it yourself.
Favorites, sharing
Layar lets you save things like recipes and coupons so you can view them again later, and you can share anything you find with others on social networks. If you find yourself sitting on a bench in the big city and scan stuff around you, chances are you’ll see a Starbucks pop up just around the corner, or a fashion store.

Bottom Line
Design / UI9
Layar is made by some experienced UI and UX experts. No one told us that, but it’s clear as daylight. |
Function8
The idea behind Layar is truly original and it’s really amazing to see how stuff around you just comes alive on your iPhone’s screen. That said, it doesn’t work unless you have Layar-marked content around you, or at least a QR code. |
Security8
Layar can pose some privacy risks in some situations, and it can even get you in trouble if you keep pointing your phone at stuff on the street. Be careful with it. |
Battery7
Takes its toll on the battery during intensive scanning sessions. |
Price10
As far as we could tell, Layar is 100% free of charge. |
Compatibility9
Works with every iDevice in existence and only requires iOS 6. |
An amazing augmented reality experience that you simply have to try for yourself.
