iTranslate 8.1.2

Translate between over 90 languages with iTranslate
Whether you’re only trying to figure out what a word you heard on the street means, learning a new language or are on a trip in a foreign country, a tool that will help with the new language is more than welcomed.

iTranslate is an app that’s easy to use and that can be quite useful, taking things a step further and accompanying the text translations with vocal pronunciations if you require it.

Large database

The app is particularly useful because it doesn’t come with a basic package with a handful of languages, but rather sports over 90 of them and allows translations between all of them. You’re not limited to words, either, but you can actually work with phrases and text passages too, although you shouldn’t expect 100 percent accuracy since that’s not something such tools can guarantee. At the very least, however, you should get a pretty good idea about what you’re reading.

You can switch between languages with ease, by tapping on the country’s flag. This will bring up a long list of languages to pick from. For some of these, you’ll notice there’s a settings button to the right. This allows you to make some choices. For English, for instance, you can pick between a woman and a man’s voice, as well as between a British, American and Australian accent. The speech speed can be adjusted with the help of a slider.

However, such features aren’t available for all of the dozens of languages in there, but there are plenty of them that do come with such options. Pronunciation for most of these languages isn’t perfect either and it sounds robotic for a good part of them, but it gets the job done.

Control with gestures

The app also supports some gestures. For instance, swiping on any of the translation areas towards the right you’ll be able to paste any text you’ve copied from another app. Swiping to the left will copy the text to the clipboard and you can use it later on.

A list of recently translated phrases can be checked out from a special area, along with those you’ve set as favorites.

If you choose the Premium version of the app, for which you’ll have to pay €4,99, you’ll get some extra features, such as voice recognition, allowing you to speak instead of type, to get rid of the ads and to translate and listen to long texts.
