MSN Health & Fitness 1.0
MSN Health & Fitness is Microsoft’s attempt to get involved in this domain too. The iOS app comes with a pretty interesting interface that makes it easy to navigate the various areas. It does seem like Microsoft is extremely fond of the Metro design it’s been pushing on all its apps, this one included.
The app gives you access to a rich set of tools for various health needs you may have. For instance, you can check out latest health news, check your step count, track your diet, train in sports, find out nutritional values for various foods and so on.
All the health data
MSN Health & Fitness will get access to your Health data from your iPhone and give you some comparison notes, telling you, for instance, how many steps you’ve taken in a certain day and how many you’ve got left to beat that score, as well as what distance you walked, how many calories you’ve burned and so on. The only thing you’ll need to remember is to actually keep your phone with you all the time to get accurate data.
The app also enables you to track your diet. This means that you have to log in your meals, dividing them into breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and other. The app already comes with a wide range of such foods that you can search for and add to the list, with a set number of calories for each. Alternatively, you can log custom foods by giving it a name, serving size, and nutrition facts.
The fitness category holds a lot of workouts that you can go through. For instance, you can work on your strength, try out some yoga classes or do some pilates. There are also additional training sessions for various purposes, such as shedding fat faster. The videos can be stopped or paused at any time and you can see how much time you have left before completing the task.
Learn something new
The app comes with some lessons on nutrition and diet information, as well as medical help. The Interactive Symptom Checker is pretty cool as it enables you to choose an area of the body where you may feel some kind of pain, pick some issues that you may be going through, and let the app figure out several possible conditions that you can read up on. You should, however, remember that it’s best to go see an actual doctor rather than rely on online information, regardless its source.
All in all, the MSN Health & Fitness is a complex tool, although it does make it seem as if Microsoft was trying to cram everything in a single product. Even so, there’s plenty of useful information and cool training videos to go through.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
App looks nice thanks to the Metro format, but is a bit confusing due to the overflow of information |
Function8
Whether it’s fitness, nutrition or medical data you need to get access to, this app has it. However, "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" and this is certainly an occasion when this rule should have been heeded |
Security8
You can use a Microsoft account to log into the app, but it’s not mandatory |
Battery8
The app will take a toll on your battery life if you watch a lot of fitness videos |
Price10
The app is free to download and use |
Compatibility7
Requires iOS 8.0, greatly limiting its reach. The app also works on iPad |
This is a pretty great app, with a lot of information, but it’s a bit too busy
