FitStar Personal Trainer 2.6.0
Envisioned by FitStar, Inc. with football legend Tony Gonzales, the app is like a personal trainer in and of itself. Every tap you make brings up Tony himself, full-screen and ready to make things happen.
Fast paced, but also in sync with your rythm
FitStar starts off with a catchy tune and a few video slides with Tony making the introductions in the background. You’re then taken to the sign in page, where you can create an account in just a few seconds. The app needs to know your current physical condition, age and gender before you can begin any training. Normally, we like apps that just get down to business, but in this case it’s relevant.
Tony is an amazing motivator
A piece of software is hardly a stand in for a personal trainer, but FitStar is different. Mainly because it’s packed to the brim with videos of Tony (and his trainees) showing you how to get stuff done.
Every exercise starts off with a quick introduction and you have full control over the speed of the sessions. You can even select the music you like (which is built right inside the app), or skip through some exercises altogether. Though Tony advises that you don’t. After all, that’s cheating. And it’s no so much about cheating the app, as it is about cheating yourself.
Inspiring & energetic
FitStar isn’t your usual workout app. There are no drawings of people crunching or doing pushups, and you don’t just hear Tony speaking in a hollow room that doesn’t bode well with your surroundings. Instead, you get an awesome audio track to motivate the workout, plus audio that signals the start and stop of a workout.
All this while Tony tells you how to tackle an exercise properly, avoiding things like pulling a muscle, or relieving tension from an area, or reassurance that it’s normal for your body to react in certain ways.
The sum of all things
The best thing about FitStar is the sum of all things. The fluent nature of the app (it’s like an interactive movie, really), the music, Tony’s spirited attitude and invaluable advice, and the endless selection of exercises make it the perfect workout tool. It’s free to download and you get the first set of exercises without charge. For more sessions, you need to enroll with a subscription, either monthly or annually.

Bottom Line
Design / UI10
Perfectly designed to inspire a workout. |
Function10
You’ll be amazed how motivating and efficient this app can be. Tony is a spirited trainer who manages to convey his energy to you through the iDevice’s display. |
Security9
Requires account creation and some personal data, but it promises never to pass on that information to other parties. |
Battery6
Can draw considerable amounts of power during intense workout sessions (which is normal). |
Price8
We can’t put our finger on this one because the pricing scheme looks a bit confusing. The app says there’s only one type of subscription, while the App Store lists almost a dozen of them. But the $4.99 monthly fee seems justified. |
Compatibility8
It’s good for iOS 7 devices and runs on all of them natively. |
