Adobe Reader 11.6.4

Reliably view and interacting with PDF documents on your iDevice
PDF tools are a dime a dozen, but few can do all the things in Adobe Reader. While much of its functionality requires a hefty subscription, the most basic viewing and editing features are available free of charge and don’t require an account.

Nice and clean

Reader displays your PDFs front and center, in landscape or portrait mode, with numerous options in the above menubar, all compressed into sub-menus to leave most of the UI available for displaying content. User tips are displayed from now and then. Night mode is broken (turns everything to black and white, including pictures).

PDF viewer

First and foremost, Adobe Reader is a PDF viewer. The viewing features don’t require a subscription and allow you to open PDF documents from email, the web, or any app that supports “Open In.” Unfortunately you can’t import PDFs from a cloud service of your choice, which is a huge downside. All you can do is sign in to Acrobat.com.

You can view PDF Portfolios, password-protected PDFs, annotations, and drawing markups, search text to find specific terms and phrases, select single page or continuous scroll modes to suit your reading habits, zoom in on text or images, use Brightness Lock to read long passages, and even use iOS VoiceOver Accessibility to navigate and read documents.

The app enables users to send any file from Reader by simply tapping it to create a link that can then be shared via email, the web, or social media.
Adobe Reader comes with iOS 8 optimization and support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

PDF creator

With a subscription you can export PDF files to Word or Excel using the Adobe ExportPDF online service, create PDF files using Adobe PDF Pack online services, store and access documents in the cloud with Acrobat.com, and more.

However, you don’t need to log into Acrobat or pay any money to annotate and comment PDFs, organize, print or share your documents.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • free PDF reader and editor all-in-one
  • everyone’s basic needs are covered free of charge (except for food, shelter and love)
  • open PDF documents from email, the web, or any app that supports “Open In”

misses

  • requires subsctiption for numerous functions
  • in-app purchases are ridiculously high
  • only integrates with Acrobat.com (no Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive integration)
Bottom Line
Design / UI8

Reader looks nice and clean, but it could use a little more work when it comes to the sub-menus. Also, the night mode function is broken. It displays everything in black and white, including pictures that normally have color.

Function8

For PDF viewing and basic editing, the free Adobe Reader is more than enough.

Security7

It connects to the web and to cloud services, wants to send some of your information to Adobe’s servers to improve services.

Battery8

Normal consumption levels.

Price5

As good as Adobe Reader is in free mode, we can’t in good faith award it a high score here. The in-app purchases combined well exceed $100 / €100. It’s a PDF tool for Pete’s sake, not a video editor!

Compatibility8

Requires iOS 7 as minimum, has iPad-ready version.

Editor's Review
