Utilitybox 2.1
The app store is filled with separate utilities for these kinds of tasks, but some apps just cram them all together in a unified interface. One of them is Utilitybox.
Outdated but still relevant
Redwheel Apps offers a compilation of utilities under one roof. Utilitybox packs a flashlight, password / number generator, latitude / longitude / altitude finder, score counter, converter, battery status, metronome, bubble level, and tip calculator, all in a UI that hasn’t seen any upgrades since 2010.
That’s fine though. Utilitybox is as relevant today as it was then. A shame not all sections work as expected. Such as the Metronome, which causes Utilitybox to crash every time you select it. But most of the app is usable, nonetheless.
A jack of all trades and a master of all
As its name implies, Utilitybox packs a number of handy utilities that you can summon at any time for common situations, such as calculating the tip at a restaurant, converting units (weight, area, angles, energy, temperature, data, force, length, power, speed, pressure), and more.
There’s even a built-in bubble level tool, and a battery monitor for your iDevice. The location utility tells you your exact position on the globe, while the score counter lets you keep an accurate score of your game with a pal. A password generator is also available. It generates strong, random passwords for you to use when you create accounts on web sites and social networks. You can even email your password right on the spot, so you don’t forget it. Just be careful with who has access to your emails.
Crashing bugs
Unfortunately, some features crash the app. The metronome utility, which would otherwise come in very handy for musicians, is unusable. Every time we tried to launch it, Utilitybox crashed. Same goes for the “more apps” menu. We were so impressed by Utilitybox that we actually wanted to check out other works by Redwheel Apps. Sadly, we couldn’t do this from the app’s interface, so we had to navigate to their website manually.

Bottom Line
Design / UI6
Living in the days of iOS 4, Utilitybox is still relevant today. The design deserves an uplift. |
Function7
Most of the built-in utilities work and are very reliable. However, some simply crash the app altogether, which makes for a bad experience. |
Security9
You need to be careful with the email-password feature. Emails are easily accessible by cybercriminals and nosy friends. |
Battery7
Drains a fair amount of juice from your iPhone. That’s because it hasn’t been optimized for two years now. |
Price10
Completely free with no ads or in-app purchases. |
Compatibility8
Works with all devices that can handle iOS 7, doesn’t have an iPad version. |
Why have 9 separate apps when you can have just one?
