FlashLight LED HD 1.51
Appealing UI
Flashlight LED HD has a really nice interface. You don’t get that in flashlight apps these days, so it’s nice to see a developer strive to make even the simplest type of utility look good.
It’s also very intuitive and fun to use. It’s got a metallic feel to it and comes with two big on/off switches for the LED flash and display light, as well as a big round color selector. More on that further below.
The padlock enables you to lock the color selector (for one reason or another), and the upper-most buttons are the settings pane and the “more” menu, which tells you a little bit about the developer and includes things like feedback and more apps by Santiago Lema.
Strobe mode for the back, colors for the front
As noted above, flashlight apps are generally very simple. And that’s the way we like them. However, once in a blue moon we stumble upon one that’s justifiably complex, like this one.
Hit the blue on/off switch and it instantly turns on the back-facing LED flash on your iPhone. A menu will also appear with two sliders, one allowing you to control the strobe mode frequency, the other to control the brightness. The brightness slider would have you think you can control the light intensity with 1-percent increments, but the LED flash only has four brightness levels. You’ll notice that if you look carefully (but don’t look into the light for too long, it might damage your eyes).
For the screen flashlight function, you can use the color selector to determine what color you want it to shine. Here, you also get two sliders, one to make the screen blink faster or slower (or not at all), the other for the brightness level. The brightness toggle overrides the iOS device’s setting, so take note of that.
A word about the ads & IAPs
FlashLight LED HD is ad-supported, meaning this one’s free to use but will flash ads before your eyes on a regular basis. There’s a Pro version in the App Store which you can grab for $0.99. That one doesn’t have ads.
In addition to the ad banner at the bottom that displays non-stop, there’s also a full-screen ad that pops up every once in a while. That one’s pretty annoying and actually obstructs functionality in this particular case.

Bottom Line
Design / UI9
Very nice design for what was supposed to be a simple flashlight utility. |
Function9
A complex flashlight app that does a lot for $0 (if you don’t mind the ads) |
Security10
We couldn’t find anything wrong in this department. |
Battery5
Drains it like crazy, as you’d expect. By default, it’s set to run forever if you leave it on. |
Price8
The cost for using this “free” app is to tolerate the never-ending ads. |
Compatibility9
Requires only iOS 6 and supports all iDevices natively. Note that those devices that don’t have a flash on the back won’t be taking full advantage. |
Quite versatile for a simple flashlight utility
