Eurosport Player 4.2
LIVE TV Preview
Eurosport player starts out with a few ads and a subscription screen which you can dismiss (if you manage to find the Close button), all while the Eurosport promos loop endlessly in the background. At first, you think you’ve hit the jackpot, because the promos are the same commercials that you see on TV. However, the LIVE content isn’t activated until you subscribe via in-app purchase ($4.99 / €4.49 monthly, automatically renewable).
Dark UI
The interface may or may not be to everyone’s liking. Personally, I find UIs with black backgrounds to be hard to navigate. However, Eurosport Player isn’t an app that you’ll have difficulty getting used to. It’s got three main sections - LIVE, TV Schedule and Videos - and neither one needs an explanation. Content is king, as always, so you’ll be spending very little time in the actual player’s UI, and more time simply watching your favorite sporting events.
No settings
One thing I found particularly bizarre in the Eurosport Player app is that you don’t get a single knob to tweak. Although normally people want a simple experience with as little setup as possible, a video player deserves at least one or two options to personalize the experience a bit. For example, the app only runs in landscape mode. Not that you’d use it any other way on the iPhone, but such an option would make perfect sense on the iPad.
There’s a free trial mode that you can try out before deciding whether or not to buy a subscription, but you can’t do it in the app.

Bottom Line
Design / UI0
The design could use a little more work, but content is king, as always. |
Function0
You get the entire Eurosport experience on your iDevice, complete with video highlights and a TV guide. It’s heaven on Earth for any sports fan. |
Security0
No outside ties except for the streaming bit. It needs some of your info to create an account, but that’s just about it. |
Battery0
Extensive usage of any video player / streaming app is bound to drain a lot of juice. But even so Eurosport is quite easy on the battery (compared to other players). |
Price0
For just $4.99 / €4.49 a month you get everything that Eurosport has to offer, right on your iPhone or iPad. The price is more than right. |
Compatibility0
The app only asks for iOS 6, and we’ve heard it even runs on iOS 5. The iPad version is optimized for the big display. |
Points off for sending you to a desktop computer to start the free trial.
