Viki 3.9.1

Popular global TV shows, trending videos and celebrity news coverage
A new type of TV apps has emerged this year. We’re not sure how to call them or where to file them exactly, but they’re awesome. These apps put genuine TV content on your smartphone or tablet, at the expense of watching an ad now and then.

Apps like Viki use this model to great success, and these guys even have a subscription model that gets rid of the pesky ads and gives you uninterrupted viewing. Only problem is you’re not getting live content.

Watch full-length episodes of your favorite TV show

Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Unless Japan TV, Korea TV, or Venezuela TV hold your favorite shows, you’re pretty much left out in the cold. But if you happen to be a fan of those soap operas that they air, you’re in luck! The visuals are nice and crisp, and the shows are full-length. No joke, try and see for yourself!

Viki offers anything from popular global TV shows, trending videos and celebrity news coverage from all over the world, to popular clips, top drama highlights, and more.

The tool also features a category called Shorts where you can find various clips that aren’t all that long. You can see several subcategories under the Shorts category, such as “Drama Highlights,” or “Short Films Worth a Watch” which should help guide viewers.

It’s also particularly easy to filter down the results when you’re looking for something specific by checking for the release date or the subtitle language.

Pesky ads

Unlike other TV apps that do away with the ads completely, this one is chock full of them. However, you can skip any ad after just 4 seconds of viewing, and start watching what you really want to watch.

Viki comes with a subscription model called a “Viki Pass” which sells for $3.99 per month and strips away the ads for a less intrusive experience, and upgrades your video quality to HD.

According to an ad in the app, you can get a free 7-day trial to see how you like it full swing. Sharing it with others also has its perks.

Other perks

You can stream videos over WiFi, 3G and 4G, watch TV shows with subtitles in more than 150 languages (yup, the community is amazing), get Timed Comments (watch videos with comments from the Viki community), share and invite your friends while publishing videos to your timeline on Facebook or Twitter, and more.

Bottom Line
Design / UI10

Viki looks great. Honestly, we couldn’t find anything wrong with the interface, and we can’t take the ads into account here because they’re not part of the design.

Function7

Although it lets you watch full-length episodes, you won’t find any popular TV shows aside from soap operas and daytime television stuff.

Security10

No problems here.

Battery7

It’s optimized to run for hours at a time. But you should expect some drainage if you use it for that long.

Price9

The price is right, and the free perks are awesome. The ads are something we don’t like too much, but the free trial bit is also pretty slick.

Compatibility9

Requires iOS 7.0 and works with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Editor's Review
VERY GOOD

That 7-day free trial is a true sign of good faith on behalf of the sellers
