Translator (Free) 2.2
Skeuomorphic design
Like most of its other apps, TapMedia gave Translator a thick, skeuomorphic interface from the iOS 4 days and left it that way as Apple gradually changed the design direction of its mobile software. It looks strange on iOS 7, but it probably feels right at home on iOS 6 (and lower) firmwares. The two-pane UI is particularly helpful as it differentiates the two selected languages well, and lets you interact with both of them separately and intuitively.
The flags to the left and right are actually buttons that let you select the languages you want to use (it can take a while to figure this one out on your own), and the History button at the top holds an entire list of translations that the app made for you.
The iPad version puts everything on the vertical and is actually more usable and better looking than the iPhone version.
Works like a charm
Translator is very useful, despite its old appearance. You just type in what you want to say and out comes the translated version below. There are dozens of languages to choose from, and while some translations may not be 100% accurate, the vocal translator more than compensates for this drawback. You can actually use it to learn pronunciation.
The “P” icon inside the upper case holds commonly used expressions for regular chit chat, food (restaurant ordering, etc), transport, hotel scenarios, emergencies, shopping, colors, and more. There are no settings to tweak, but you can upgrade to the premium version to remove the pesky ads. Otherwise the app works with all its features enabled, for free.

Bottom Line
Design / UI6
Although Translator is in dire need of a facelift, people with poor eye sight might actually appreciate the old design more. |
Function8
A very handy translator with a built-in pronunciation function. Even has a phrasebook for commonly used phrases. |
Security8
A passcode lock wouldn’t hurt, since some translations stay on the device (i.e. via the sharing function) |
Battery9
Very easy on the iPhone’s battery. On iPad, you won’t even feel any impact |
Price9
No feature restrictions but it’s ad supported and offers the option to remove the ads through in-app purchase |
Compatibility9
Requires only iOS 5 and supports all iDevice models natively |
If they give it a facelift, we’ll be the first to rate it well over 9
