MyCalendar Free 3.02
Copycat design
If MyCalendar Free looks familiar, don’t worry, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. It just so happens that it borrows the design of Apple’s own Calendar application, but it’s not as intuitive as Apple’s solution unfortunately.
Despite being geared towards b-days, it’s actually a pretty cumbersome app. There are various viewing modes and subsections, which may sound like a perk but really it just makes the app more confusing.
Mandatory login
For a calendar app, MyCalendar is very intrusive. You can’t use any of its features without signing up first. It asks for your birthday but it fails to mark it on the calendar. It may sound redundant, but there are people who work so hard that they forget their birthday is coming up in a couple of days. It doesn’t hurt to be reminded to just live your life everyone once in a while.
Requires lots of manual input
Adding people is also a drag, and there’s little feedback in terms of what the app will do once you’ve finished adding someone to the list of friends whose birthdays you want to remember. It doesn’t say whether or not you’ll be alerted about it, whether you’ll be alerted a day before or on the day, etc.
One thing I found handy was the option to assign a picture to every person that you add. The more visual the experience, the easier it is to use the app.
It also offers the option to instantly text the person whose b-day it is, as well as drop them a message on their Facebook wall.
The pro version offers the ability to back up birthday data to the cloud, removes the ads, and comes with the promise than any premium features that are in the works will be delivered free of charge.

Bottom Line
Design / UI6
Clean design, but it’s mostly copied from Apple and it’s badly implemented too. It’s a drag to use it. |
Function7
Doesn’t do much except keep a record of all your friends’ birthdays, with the ability to text them from within the app. |
Security6
Privacy takes a huge hit here as it’s mandatory to sign up and provide personal information. Cloud backups and Facebook integration come with their own specific privacy risks. |
Battery9
Normal consumption levels. |
Price7
Requires in-app purchases for various features, and includes ads. |
Compatibility9
Requires iOS 5.1.1 and has an iPad-native version. |
The instant-texting feature is probably the only thing worth downloading it for.
