Digg 5.6.2
Good quality news
Digg remains one of the best news aggregators on the web, but also one of the most curated services of its kind. When you browse the web looking for the latest updates, more often than not you end up on some obscure blog reading some block-head’s personal take on a matter that may or may not even be accurate or true. You won’t get that with Digg, even if you try to.
Digg Deeper allows you to see stories and videos that your friends have shared, but also those from favorite writes and publications that you particularly like. You’ll also get the recommended stories your friends have shared as a stream that you can scroll through.
For those users with iOS 8, the top stories can be viewed without even launching the app from the new Digg Widget in the notifications area. The tool also comes with 1Password integration for easier logins, which puts Digg in the same line as many other apps that have adopted this password manager integration in recent months.
Subscribing isn’t mandatory
You don’t need to create an account to use Digg. For basic reading functionality, all you need is the app and an Internet connection. Even the Internet connection isn’t a must at all times. Simply browse the stories and save the ones that you like, and then when the Internet is out of reach, just go into your Saved folder and read them there (complete with pictures and everything). Stories can also be saved to Instapaper, Pocket, and Readability.
What you do need a subscription for are various sharing and saving features, comments, likes, and of course the RSS feed.
Some videos will fail to load, while others will simply show up as “not supported” on your device. We’re guessing those are Flash videos.
Washed out UI
The on-screen controls in Digg are a little too washed out. The gray theme makes every control on screen appear as if it’s inaccessible or unavailable. People are used to grayed-out buttons when those buttons aren’t functional. In Digg, it’s the exact opposite.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
Digg makes news reading a pleasure, and the best thing about it is the high-quality content. The UI is too lightweight, but it’s not a major problem. |
Function9
A reliable news aggregator with a built in RSS feed that’s optimized for iOS devices. What’s there not to like? |
Security9
Has the usual social ties (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.) so it’s not local, but it also doesn’t pose too many privacy risks (as long as you use it properly). |
Battery9
Digg is very easy on the battery and doesn’t drain much power even during video playback. |
Price10
Free of charge with no ads or in-app purchases. Of course, Digg can’t do much about the ads embedded in the sites it serves up for reading. |
Compatibility9
Digg continues to support iOS 7 as well as iOS 7 and even has a native iPad version |
Still one of the best news aggregators out there.
