Best Flash Light! 4.4
Skeuomorphic design
Best Flash Light has an old-style UI featuring a lot of skeuomorphism. But it’s very direct regarding what each knob does, and it’s very responsive to your touch. The ads are a pain, but what are you going to do? Dev’s got to make a living.
Not just a flashlight utility
The app has various functions that revolve around the rear-facing LED flash on your iPhone. The main button in the middle turns it on full blast, while the slider below it allows you to adjust the intensity.
You can clap your hands for instant-on lighting, and there’s a disco mode that flashes the light at different intervals, depending on how you set it. A magnifying glass function allows you to read labels and look at stuff that you normally would’t see without an actual magnifying glass. These features are usually scams, but this one actually does the trick. It’s like a mini microscope.
The battery meter sitting at the top is not very accurate, and the app is full of ads and nags to buy the full version, as well as other apps from RV AppStudios. The iPad version is pretty much useless as it uses the tablet’s display instead of the LED flash, which iPads don’t have. Admittedly there are ways to bypass the in-app purchases (by sharing the app with your friends through social media).
IAPs
Somewhat expensive, considering that it has two separate in-app purchases, one for removing the ads and the other for unlocking features. One in-app purchase should be enough for both. But the fact that you can bypass one of them by sharing with friends is a thoughtful gesture on behalf of RV AppStudios.

Bottom Line
Design / UI0
It looks decent and the UI is very responsive to touch. It’s easy to pick up and use instantly. |
Function0
Packs a great deal of functions, and even more if you pluck some cash or spread the word through social networks. The magnifying glass is a very handy feature. |
Security0
It doesn’t pose security problems (at least none that we could discover in our testing), but it’s a bit intrusive and wants you to go social with it to spread the word among friends. Flashlight apps are best left local. |
Battery0
Uses up considerable amounts of power because of its main trait: turn on the LED flash on your iDevice. |
Price0
It has two separate in-app purchases, one for removing the ads and the other for unlocking features. |
Compatibility0
Supports iDevices on iOS 5 or higher starting with iPhone 4 (the first one to have a flash). Even iPads are supported, but instead of using the flash (which iPads don’t have), it uses the display by turning it white. It’s not ideal, but at least they |
Final grade: 7.3 (worth grabbing if only just for the magnifying function)
