An app that can express common measurement units in common items familiar to everyone
Converting various units form one reference system into another may seem the only possible type of transformation that makes sense to anyone, but there is another was in which we sometimes involuntarily express quantities.

More precisely, we will use with as much efficiency the comparisons with everyday things we encounter when saying, for example that something was as long as a bus or as tall as a building. For Windows Phone users there is a special app that works on this principle and it is suggestively called Approximately.

Nice and tidy look, with a practical layout

The utility has a fairly well designed aspect, with some decent graphics that are illustrative for the purpose of the application. Thus, the background resembles a close-up on a ruler, with a blend of yellow hues.

Switching screens and moving through he few sections of the app is done fluently and without any issues. The only noticeable annoyance comes from the continuously changing advertisements that are shown inside the GUI.

Quick conversions for a few Metric and Imperial units

Approximately is able to handle only a very limited number of measurement transformations that belong to mass, length and volume. The procedure is fairly easy to carry out, as all you have to to is input the value to be converted and then pick the source and output units.

The results are shown in a large font at the bottom of the screen, but given the black color of the unit names often makes them a bit difficult to distinguish from the ruler-like markings of the background pattern.

It is important to note that all the transformations are done, as the name of the app clearly states, with a certain approximation, so, in case you choose a really small subdivision of a measurement unit it will not convert properly in many output formats unless a really large number is typed in. Milligrams to a brick or a car is a good example for this.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • allows users to make some really interesting conversions from actual countermeasure units into every day objects

misses

  • has a very limited area of usage as it covers only 3 categories of measurements
  • annoying ads are shown inside the GUI
Bottom Line
Design / UI8

The appearance of this application is quite friendly, without too many visually appealing elements, but also not at all austere. The adverts that plague all the sections of the GUI spoil much of the good feel of the app.

Function5

The utility comes up with a very good and original idea and provides a good set of elements of equivalence, but the areas to which they apply is very restricted, being limited to 3 domains alone.

Security8

Approximately needs to look into some system areas that it has nothing to do with, like the phone dialer or the owner identity.

Battery9

Thanks to a very reduced power consumption, this application manages to keep the battery usage at very low levels all through its runtime.

Price8

The nice concept brought by this tool is well worth the time to try it, but there are some disadvantages that make it lose a few points overall.

Compatibility10

Any Windows Phone handset on the market should be able to run this utility as it works under version 7 or higher of the operating system.
