Noise Level Meter 1.1.1.3

Get an estimation on the noise levels around you using just your Windows Phone and a small app
Many people work in relatively noisy environments, but just how loud are the background interferences remains unknown until a specialized tool is put to work.

The professional-grade utilities for carrying out such tasks can be quit costly, but, fortunately there are ways of getting the job done with minimal costs.

Those who want to turn their Windows Phone handsets into noise detectors and get a rough estimation concerning the intensity of that background noise may try out a dedicated app like Noise Level Meter.

Tidy and simple appearance

This application has a clean look that is almost completely void of any elements of graphical design as it features the sensitive meter in the middle of a just about empty screen painted all in a mellow hue of yellow.

Red and black are also used sporadically for the app's name, which is displayed in the upper part of the screen and also for the numbers that represent the readings.

An occasional nuisance appears erratically and it takes the form of an advertisement banner that comes and goes after spending only a few seconds on the main screen.

Automatic and continuous detection

Once you start it, Noise Level Meter will begin the noise detection automatically and can go on without a break until you exit the app. The numbers change ever so fast that it is hard to read them and you will most likely end up having in mind an average rather than an exact value.

Unfortunately, there is no way of logging the readings and, more importantly, the application lacks a calibration module that would increase a lot the precision of the measurements.

Perhaps because there is no way of setting the bar for Noise Level Meter, it seems to provide some less accurate readings when used in quiet environments.

Faulty behavior in certain usage scenarios

There are some other issues that you should consider when trying out this app, like the frequent crashes that occur when the utility resumes its activity if you restore it from the list of recently used apps.

Another shortcoming that you might come across is related to the use of Noise Level Meter in landscape mode. To be more precise, if the phone is not held in portrait mode, there will be no readings on display.

Bottom Line
Design / UI4

The application has an overly simplified look and the lack of customizations as well as the presence of the ads take their toll as well.

Function2

Noise Level Meter only shows some continuously changing numbers, without any kind of features and quite a lot of flaws inside.

Security10

Users can install and keep this app without any worries because if is very discreet and leaves all the sensitive system areas untouched.

Battery2

The power consumption is through the roof and in case you want to discharge your handset's battery quickly, keeping this utility turned on will do the trick.

Price9

The application has no costs in sight, only the advertisement banners will pay some random visits to the main screen from time to time.

Compatibility8

Any Windows Phone 8.1 handset with a working microphone is suitable for having Noise Level Meter installed.
