Spending Tracker 2.4
Catchy UI
Spending Tracker is one of those tools that looks like the right app to track your financial life. It’s got a nifty UI (not necessarily a modern one) with tables and graphs, making it ideal to track spending in any scenario and in any viewing mode you prefer. Save for the iOS 6-style calendar, the interface is very appropriate for this kind of app. The fonts and the app’s icon are actually quite lovely, albeit very old fashioned.
Tracking finances doesn't have to be a chore
Finance apps are usually a bore. Spending Tracker tries to make the experience pleasant by guiding the user through the motions every step of the way. The blackboard-style Expense/Income screen is your Home turf. Here you get a bird’s eye view of your cash flow and cash balance, and if you rotate your device it instantly displays a pie chart based on your numbers. You can switch to graph view if you want.
Every spending category is well determined and even has its own nifty icon. Everything is editable.
Spending Tracker integrates with Dropbox, supports multiple accounts and uses a passcode lock to protect the user’s information. The iPad build is much more usable thanks to the increased work space, and some of the interface elements are changed. The tool is suitable both for personal use, and for business.
Poorly optimized for iOS 7
We can’t give high marks to an app that actually requires iOS 7 but is not fully optimized for the firmware. UI is somewhat dated and the battery drainage undoubtedly comes from this poor optimization. Not to mention that people on iOS 6 are left out in the cold.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
Lovely design, font and application icon. The blackboard-style home screen is a really nice touch, and the graphs are very easy to follow. Strangely, not all of the UI is made for iOS 7. Some elements are still stuck in the iOS 6 era. |
Function7
Makes for a great personal finance tool, as well as a board meeting utility. However, it’s prone to crashing, which can result in serious consequences for people working with large numbers. It gets extra points for a very explanatory Help menu. |
Security9
We can’t vow it’s airtight (considering the crashes and all), but the passcode lock is a very welcome addition. Finance is nothing to joke about, and MH Riley Ltd seems to be taking these matters very seriously. |
Battery6
Unfortunately, for all the good that it promises Spending Tracker is not very well optimized for iDevices and consumes relatively high amounts of power. It’s surprising, considering the app has no graphics-intensive content (animations, video, etc.) embedded in its UI. |
Price7
Free with a considerable amount of limitations. It also displays full-screen ads that advertise other apps, in what is quite atypical for such a tool. The experience is somewhat disappointing because of this, while the full-version sells for $2.99 / €2.69. |
Compatibility7
Requires iOS 7 but is not fully optimized for the firmware. the battery drainage undoubtedly comes from this poor optimization. |
We hope it gets updated so we can give it the score it deserves
