STANLEY Level 2.0.1

Just a simple tool that indicates whether a surface is straight or not
Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. is well known in the hand tools industry. Like every big player, they have at least one iPhone app that’s the equivalent of one of their handy products, in this case, the STANLEY Level tool.

Simple utilities tend to be not so simple because of the ads or the various promotional menus in them, mainly because there’s no other way to monetize them. STANLEY has a different approach, because the company can afford to throw a few dollars in the right direction without asking for anything in return.

STANLEY Level is a simple level utility that lets you employ your iPhone and even your iPad to check and see if a surface is straight or not. It uses a realistic representation of the air bubble inside a tube filled with liquid, making it feel very natural and genuine. The tool is ideal for hanging, building, and mounting.

Clean UI, lets you focus on your work

As such, their level utility is clean, ad free, elegantly designed and usable from the first second you launch the app. The app has two skins too. In case you get bored of one, you can choose to use the other.

In fact, Stanley's simple Level app is probably the best of its kind in the App Store. Usually these utilities are either bundled with other measurement tools, and often they're not very reliable because the calibration process is a drag.

No IAPs

In addition to not displaying ads or promo materials (such as get-these-tools-in-our-stores), Stanley Level also doesn't have any in-app purchases, or any other type of nag screens that would otherwise make you lose focus. Imagine trying to measure something to the millimeter and then a dialog pops up saying "get the full version." Kudos to Stanley for resisting the temptation to make an extra buck in exchange for the user's frustration.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • simple, elegant design
  • no learning curve, no setup
  • easy calibration (in case you need to)

misses

  • requires recalibration if you use it inappropriately
  • cogs icon should hide a settings menu, not an “about us” screen
Bottom Line
Design / UI9

Elegant, non-intrusive and usable from the first second you launch the app. The cogs icon would suggest a settings panel, but it’s just an “about us” screen.

Function10

STANLEY Level is very accurate and includes a calibration screen where you can fix it if it gets messed up (an iPhone’s accelerometer is not 100% the same as that of another iPhone’s accelerometer).

Security10

The app is completely local and doesn’t require any personal information whatsoever.

Battery9

Normal consumption levels.

Price10

Fully free with no ads or in-app purchases. Well, technically the app is an ad in and of itself, but what are they going to do, disguise their logo?

Compatibility7

STANLEY for one reason or another decided that their app would only be used on devices running iOS 7.1 and up. We don’t understand why, but we’re sure they had their reasons.
