Ruler 1.1.2

Measure things less than three inches long with your iPhone’s display
Another kind-of pointless app has landed in our lap today. Created by the fine gents at DAVA Consulting, Ruler is an ancient application that only requires iOS 3.0 to run and frankly just belongs in that day and age. But to be fair, it’s not 100% useless.

Three inches, or 6.5 centimeters

That’s about as much as you can measure with this app, regardless of your iPhone’s display because the app is not optimized for anything bigger than iPhone 3G/3GS/4. It doesn’t go full screen on iPhone 5 or newer, and there isn’t even an iPad version, though it would have been very relevant.

You can move each limiter individually (horizontally and vertically) to get an accurate measurement of both length and width, or height and width, depending on the object you’re measuring. Of course, if you want to go a little further and calculate the object’s volume or area, you need to bust out a calculator for that.

Ancient interface

The UI is old and dated, just like the app itself. It hasn’t received an update since 2010, but we must admit that the design is modern for a 2010 app. The “i” button sitting at the top right side hides a menu where you can switch between inches and centimeters, as well as an Upgrade button and an ad to download a reference app about fire arms. Which conflicts with the 4+ age rating if you ask us.

Some actions result in an error message being displayed. It states “no internet connection,” despite the phone being connected to the Internet.

  • can measure match boxes
  • has vertical and horizontal limiter
  • nice graphics for 2010

  • no iPad version
  • non-working features (errors)
  • promotes firearms reference app despite having a 4+ age rating
Bottom Line
Design / UI5

Looks okay for a 2010 app, but really outdated in this day and age.

Function3

Ruler is kind of pointless because it can only measure really small things.

Security5

The advertised firearms app is in conflict with the 4+ age rating.

Battery8

Normal consumption levels.

Price7

It’s free but it also displays ads and has in-app purchases. We wonder what for: expanding the UI beyond the phone?

Compatibility6

The low firmware requirement certainly deserves some high marks, but the fact that it’s not optimized for today’s iPhones is enough to take those points back. Also, no iPad version.

Editor's Review
FAIR

Or about as many inches as you can possibly measure with this app.
