Flashlight for iPhone, iPod and iPad 3.10

A barebones mobile UI for the world’s largest online encyclopedia
Keep close tabs on our Utilities section because here’s where you can really draw the line between useless junk and apps that provide real value for your buck. The developer’s marketing may be enough to convince you to make the buy, but it doesn’t hurt to read a tester’s hands-on opinion, does it?

A flashy flashlight utility

If you’re the type who enjoys a flashlight app that actually has graphics and a bunch of other cool functions, Lemondo Entertainment’s “Flashlight for iPhone, iPod and iPad” may be what you’re looking for.

For a flashlight app, it’s got quite a handsome face and it needs it too, for the various additional features it offers (besides simply turning on your device’s LED flash). There are themes you can choose from, including a girly pink one, and everything on-screen is easy to understand and use.

Compass, altitude tracker, live map

You just tap the power button and the LED flash on your iDevice turns on. The app actually lights up by default, but you can change that in the settings. You get different themes and different flashlight modes, such as strobe mode (with different intensities), colorful screen lights (including animated candle light), and a built-in compass that works in real time as you mess around with the flashlight.

A live map view gives you an instant reading of all the places in the world where the app is currently being used. Other (typical) features include, an SOS signal, a Disco mode which syncs the LED light to the beat of your music (and it actually works if the music isn’t too loud), and altitude info. The iPad version is nearly identical (and somewhat ridiculously large, considering the purpose of the app).

Hits & Misses

hits

  • a flashy app with a pretty neat UI
  • strobe mode with different frequencies
  • animated lighter candle

misses

  • live map is kind of useless and requires location services
  • kills the battery
  • is chock full of ads and has a built-in app store
Bottom Line
Design / UI6

Decent UI with a nice look and feel to it. Includes catchy themes and well placed buttons. No explanatory guide, though.

Function7

Not just a flashlight app, this one actually includes a lot of nifty surprises that actually work (unlike other apps like this).

Security6

It wants your location and it’s keen on sending you push notifications that will probably affect your privacy.

Battery3

Drains it like hell, and we’re not surprised. Flashlight apps tend to do that, and especially so when they use location services.

Price7

Not exactly free when the full product is “flashed” before your eyes (pun intended) with a price tag. Plus, it’s full of ads and it has a built-in store for other apps by Lemondo.

Compatibility6

Only devices with LED flash can take full advantage of its features.
