Action Movie FX 2.9.1
Plus it’s probably the best time to get it. The Star Trek FX pack is freely available for download, and we hear it’s only for a limited time. If we were you, we’d start downloading now and continue reading as the 80MB app gets installed on your iPhone or iPad.
Crisp visuals, surprisingly realistic
In addition to a very good interface, Action Movie FX comes with a truckload of movie effects as downloadable packs, some free, some paid. The free bundles are enough to get a few good movies out, and make an idea of what the app is all about. We’d spend time describing it, but we’re pretty sure any words we’ll use will pale in the face of a hands-on experience.
You have to try it to believe it
Case in point, we’d recommend just grabbing it and taking it for a spin. The app will guide you through every step of the way, but just to be safe, we’ll give you a few pointers ourselves.
Choose wide spaces with few objects in sight, such as a big avenue, or a place where you can see both the sky and the ground. This is great for effects like the star-ship Enterprise passing through your frame.
For things like the spider effect, a desk will do just fine. Just don’t sit too close to the screen when you play back the movie. Chances are you’ll flinch and drop your device.
You can tweak the timing with the scrubber, and you can save your clips to the camera roll or share them on social networks. You also get Hollywood-style sound effects to go with your footage.
HD effects for free
Another good piece of news, especially for existing users, is that any previous FX purchases have been updated to HD for free. If you have the app installed but didn’t grab them yet, just hit RESTORE PURCHASES in the app.
There are six FX included for free: spider strike, avalanche, missile attack, car smash, demolition rock, and rough terrain.

Bottom Line
Design / UI10
The UI may have some shortcomings, but the entire visual experience deserves our biggest score. |
Function8
Hands down, the best way to add Hollywood-style effects to your movies, for free. However, the app can become unstable and crash at times. |
Security9
We couldn’t find anything intrusive or risky. Except maybe if your movies turn out so realistic that you’ll scare someone to death. It’s been known to happen. |
Battery6
Drains a fair amount of juice, but justifiably so. |
Price10
You get more than you could ask for in exchange for your free download, while the IAPs are priced attractively (just $0.99 each). |
Compatibility10
Requires only iOS 5 and supports all iDevices, including iPads. |
Prank your parents by using the missile effect on the family car in your driveway.
