3D Benchmark 1.1
Test the GPU power of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad
To benchmark a computer, tablet or smartphone means to run a computer program that has been specifically designed to assess the relative performance of the CPU, GPU, or other parts of the machine, by running a number of standard tests and trials against it.
There’s a flurry of such tools for iOS platforms, including one intriguing 3D Benchmark app from Luis Evaristo Rodriguez Campos.
Form
If you’re looking for an app that churns out a big log with data about the behavior of your graphics processor, this isn’t the right app for you. But if you want to get a World War II feel, you’ve come to the right place.
3D benchmark is not very attractive, but it’s not designed to impress you visually. Developer Luis Evaristo Rodriguez Campos clearly states that his app is meant to “test the 3D power of your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.” And it does so without fail.
Function
Using very poor graphics but a very high frame rate, 3D benchmark tests your iPhone or iPad to see how fast it “resolves” Hitler’s invasion of Britain using hundreds of planes hovering above a battle field. It only takes a few seconds to asses the computing power of your device, and depending on your hardware your mileage will vary.
It even has a built-in mini game that lets you fly a plane and shoot enemies down. Unfortunately the controls are almost impossible to understand. You can post your results to a forum and compare your numbers with other people’s benchmark results.
We’d hoped that the benchmark results would include more than just the time and the FPS. The sharing feature would be even nicer had it not sent us out of the app and onto some forum in Safari.

Bottom Line
Design / UI5
The app is not designed to impress visually, but that doesn't mean it's okay to make it ugly |
Function7
Benchmark results are scarce, and the built-in mini game is a nice touch but it’s virtually unplayable. |
Security8
It connects to Game Center for some reason, and it takes you out of the app without warning. |
Battery7
If you run it a lot it will start to drain your battery. |
Price10
Free with no ads and no in-app purchases. |
Compatibility10
Supports every iDevice currently in circulation today and has a dedicated iPad version. |
Editor's Review
GOOD
Good for assessing your frame rates, but that’s just about it
