TechCrunch 2.4.0.6
It brings you all the latest news on technology and gadgets, directly from the website. You'll have free access to all articles and the option to download them for offline reading using WiFi connection, so that you wouldn't waste mobile data in your plan.
Clean interface that resembles that of the website
The app sports a really nice interface with plenty of features at hand, but it doesn't come with a tutorial to show new users how to navigate inside and access all sections.
Still, it shouldn't be that difficult seeing how the app has only a few categories to choose from and some settings nicely arranged under the overflow button on the upper right side of the screen. You can also search for articles easily, simply by typing in keywords in the search bar but the app won't provide you with any suggestions.
Browse through all sort of articles
TechCrunch launches with the home section, where you can check out all the top stories of the day by simply sliding the screen down. It gives you instant access to all articles featured on the website and displays the hour when they were added.
You can also slide the screen left to view trending articles, but there are no thumbnail pictures in this section. In addition, you can check out TCTV videos on various topics, they don't last for long and come in HD making it easier and faster to accumulate new information.
Read all sort of articles
The app comes with all sort of articles neatly arranged into categories like gadgets, mobile, greentech, gaming and many more. You can download whichever you wish on your device or actually set the app to automatically save articles when the phone is connected to WiFi, so you wouldn't bother with sorting them out.
Swipe left to read the next articles and TechCrunch app even lets you enlarge text or share stories with friends on social networks. There are suggestions at the end of each article and you can check out stories written by the same author by tapping on the explore section.
However, it seems that the section doesn't work properly which is quite inconvenient. The app comes with banner ads, but they're mainly to AOL and they're not really that annoying. Still, there's no option of removing ads.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
The interface is really simplistic, but instead of displaying topics in a list it would have been nicer if the app had a side menu. |
Function7
Some sections don't really work and in order to post comments users must log into their Facebook account. |
Security8
It needs some permissions from your phone but it shouldn't really pose any privacy issues. |
Battery8
Consumption is normal for a news reader, although you might want to keep an eye on resources if you intend to watch many videos. |
Price9
It's free of charge, but comes with some banner ads mainly to AOL and there's no option of removing them. |
Compatibility8
It needs devices running Android version 4.0 or later, making it inaccessible to some users. |
It's a nice news reader app but it could use some more features.
