History Channel (Read Aloud) 5.20

An unofficial free app to listen to all articles published on History Channel
It seems that independent developers have created unofficial apps for many big websites and TV channels, making them accessible to Android users from all over the world. History Channel also received an app that streams content and brings it closer to users. The app seemsto be well designed giving people the possibility to customize the home screen to their own liking, as some other apps do.

Intuitive UI that comes with a tutorial

The app itself doesn't seem that complicated, but in order to make sure that users get the hang of it fast, developers have included a 6-page tutorial with instructions on how it works and all sorts of other tips that you can check out.

It's got some grammar mistakes in the tutorial section. The last tip in the whole tutorial suggests users to download another app for more channels and almost anywhere you tap on the home screen, the same message appears.

Listen to various articles narrated from the History Channel website

The app takes a bit to load articles and narration, you can have it play music while waiting but it's a commercial to their other app. Still, when the article finally loads, you'll notice that it features a computer voice, which you can change but only by returning to the home page.

Tap on the voice setting to change it and you'll notice that the app still opens the upgrade message. Even if you finally give in and upgrade, you'll still won't be able to adjust settings to the app because of the same nagging message.

Browse through other articles

When you open an article, the app starts the narration and displays the text from the original History Channel website. Users have the option of sharing stories on social networks. There's also a bar with subtitles, so you can read as you listen. Settings can be found under the 'hamburger' icon in the top left of the screen.

Audio streaming isn't top-notch, the speed variates and at times it may end abruptly. The app may connect to your car's bluetooth but only if you switch to the Web2Go app.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7

The interface is well structured and comes with a tutorial, but the app is rather deceiving as users can't actually customize their home page.

Function4

There are apps with better audio streaming, more available features and a more user-friendly interface. They're also free.

Security4

The app needs lots of permissions from your phone and they're not all connected to its features.

Battery6

Consumption of battery is slightly above average.

Price5

It comes with banner and full screen ads. The app is filled with nagging messages for downloading Web2Go app.

Compatibility8

It should work on devices running Android version 2.3.3 – 4.4.

Editor's Review
POOR

Computer voices and settings that can't be made even after installing the additional app. History Channel is annoying at best.
