Duolingo: Learn Languages Free

Learn new languages with this fun and interactive app
Instead of buying expensive textbooks or paying for courses to learn a new language, try using Duolingo: Learn Languages Free. It's free and doesn't come with apps, but don't expect miracles. It will teach you the basics but nothing more.

Interactive app to learn new languages

Duolingo: Learn Languages Free is a good app for learning new languages, you can choose from a list of Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, English and more. The app provides the option of starting as a beginner or taking a placement test to asses your language skills.

Lessons come with pictures to tap on, checks after each answer and spelling suggestions. In addition, sound recordings help you get accustomed with pronunciation, however there are no phonetics available. There are also writing exercises, with suggestions on accents to be placed in that particular language.

Share progress with friends

The app comes with a wide range of lessons, divided into categories, each with new words and exercises. However, tests are locked, so you can't skip from beginner to intermediate. But if you feel confident enough, you can take a shortcut.

This app also allow you to create or sign in with your social networking accounts to track progress and follow friends that use this app. All progress that you make with language skills is recorded. And if you'd ever think to slack, this app can be set to send several emails to remind you to practice.

An entertaining app but not very useful for intermediates

While the app is truly entertaining and fun, you can't actually learn how to properly speak or read in a new language. Although, it may try, Duolingo: Learn Languages Free can't replace language teachers or proper textbooks. The app is fun to use but it's GUI and actual degree of difficulty recommend it rather for school children, as a fun way to encourage them to learn new languages and skills.

Editor's Review
VERY GOOD

It's a fun and interactive app, but you won't get the same learning experience as in classrooms or from courses. It's mainly recommended for beginner children and students.
