SmartNews 2.4.1
Sleek and colorful interface
You'd want a news reader to come with an intuitive interface and SmartNews doesn't let you down. All sections are divided into colorful tabs on top of the screen, simply tap on categories or swipe the screen to browse through articles. It comes in an international edition, aside from the ones from Japan or the US.
Pull down to access settings and the menu. You can set delivery times and have the app post notifications during certain hours of the day. You can edit or add channels, have the app only download content via Wi-Fi, enlarge the font size or set screen orientation.
Customize the interface
There's no option of changing the skin or theme of the app. It doesn't come with a night mode to switch to in case the lights are dim when reading articles. Still, you can choose from a wide selection of topics, like entertainment, sports, tech and science.
You also have the option of adding more categories and websites to the feed. Choose from trending, popular or themed ones to make sure the app provides you with the information you need to start your day. Still, articles aren't available for offline reading.
Browse through various articles
The app makes it easy to browse through various articles. Simply scroll down to view articles from a certain category and tap on one to read. The app delivers trending articles from some of the top websites out there, making sure it provides you with all you need to stay informed.
You can either choose between smart and web view. Smart view leaves out certain bits of the interface, making it ideal for when your internet connection is weak. It leaves out headers, photos, links to other articles and many more elements from a webpage. Each article can be shared on social networks.

Bottom Line
Design / UI9
The interface is colorful and easy-to-use, but the app lacks a night view and the option of selecting another theme. |
Function8
It provides you with news on various topics, but there's no quick setup menu when the app launches. Also, articles can't be saved for offline reading. |
Security8
It doesn't need many permissions from your phone, but it does peak into some areas that aren't connected to its features like location services. |
Battery8
Normal consumption of battery for a news reader, so you don't have to constantly keep an eye on resources. |
Price10
Completely free of charge, no ads or in-app purchases whatsoever. |
Compatibility9
It should work just fine on devices running Android version 2.2 or later, making it accessible to many users. |
A nifty app for staying informed and reading the latest news articles and reports.
