gMaps 3.1
gMaps is one of the helpers that come fully equipped to provide a fairly easy to use means of discovering the shortest road to any location.
Friendly and very practical interface
The neat interface of this application is based on Google Maps and allows you to add several layers that can provide some useful extra information like weather, traffic or transport.
There are several views available and they can be switched easily, so you can opt for the hybrid, physical, street, water overlay or satellite maps. Moving around is fairly smooth, with some inherent delays that are less bothersome than the advertisements you will encounter inside the app.
Get the shortest route to any location and find places of interest nearby
The navigation feature of gMaps is pretty accurate and the directions it displays are clear and easy to follow. The utility comes with some dedicated functions for discovering local attractions or service providers for any selected spot on the map.
The ability to share with contacts the current map view or a route you created is a neat addition. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of details associated to the locations you add to the favorites or discover through the built-in search.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
This utility looks pretty well and provides a lot of information at a glance, despite the fact that when going through the menus you will come across a good deal of adverts. The difficulties it has when zooming and moving around the map also take away a couple of points. |
Function8
There are many useful features awaiting to be discovered inside gMaps, but the usage seems to be a bit more difficult than with other similar apps. The routes are calculated quickly and with many reference points, but it lacks the voice guidance and more detailed information about the local places. |
Security8
The application handles fairly well the personal data stored in sensitive areas of the system, as it requires access to contacts, location services or phone dialer, but also to appointments, phone and owner identities. |
Battery5
gMaps is quite battery intensive and the power consumption is very high, so the handset might require recharging after a couple of hours of continuous usage of this app. |
Price8
A pretty good deal overall, the application offers a lot of features for free, but there are some utilities that are a bit better, so its value decreases for this reason. |
Compatibility9
Any device that is powered by Windows Phone 7.5 or above should be good to support this app, as long as it has a built-in compass for the corresponding function gMaps comes with. |
