Universal Converter 2.1
Windows Phone users have at their disposal quite a few apps tailored for this job and among them Universal Converter brings a slightly different approach that is supposed to be easier to use.
Friendly front-end for quick conversions
The application has a clean look, with a well-thought layout that facilitates the access to all the features and commands. There are two lists of units, one next to the other, meant to be used for selecting the input and output sources.
The numeric keypad stretches across half of the screen, so the buttons are easy to distinguish and press, while the list of available quantities is reachable from the lower part of the screen. Also present inside the GUI are some flashing ad banners that can be quite disruptive at times.
Instant transformations for any pair of units
Universal Converter is very easy to operate, since all you have to do is pick the measurement unit you want to convert from and the target unit, then input the value to be processed. The results are displayed as you type, so the waiting time is virtually nonexistent.
Swapping the units with one tap is cannot be done, but you have the possibility to change places for the value from the output field and use it as input for a new conversion. Negative numbers can be used only for temperature transformations, as the corresponding button is grayed out for other conversions.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8
The application offers a decent appearance, with a well organized layout that makes it quite easy to use. There are two themes users can choose from, but the pesky ads will appear regardless of these modifications. |
Function8
This utility supports the most common types of conversion units, but there is definitely room for improvement in this respect. Also, it would be great if users would have the possibility to copy the results and use them in other apps or share them. |
Security7
For a tool that is supposed to be a simple unit conversion solution, this app requires access in some areas of the system it shouldn't be looking into. |
Battery8
The moderate power consumption that this application has during its run time means that the battery usage remains within normal limits at all times. |
Price8
There are few new things brought by this app and they are related mainly to the looks and way of selecting the units, so its overall value is good, but there are other utilities that offer a more complete list of measurement units. |
Compatibility9
Universal Converter is ready for use on most Windows Phone devices as it only needs version 7.5 of the operating system to be installed onto the handset. |
