Daily Fiction 2.3.1.1

A nice application that lets you enjoy a few minutes of reading short fiction on the go
Many people like to spend a bit of reading with their morning coffee or while traveling to work, to make the distance pass away unnoticed.

The multitude of reading habits and preferences makes it difficult for any one app to offer something for any taste, but there are specialized utilities that can cater to certain specific needs in this respect and Daily Fiction is one of them.

Uncomplicated appearance, bent on function rather than on form

This application provides a simple and fairly clean interface, where the focus is set on the actual written content and its visibility. This means that there are not too many, if any elements of graphical design that would appear as appealing to the users.

Nonetheless, the legibility of the texts is quite good and the navigation inside the main screen as seamless as possible. A visible annoyance comes from the bottom of the screen where there are some irritating ad banners that keep on flashing.

On certain occasions, especially when starting up the app, some prompts to rate and review the app will come into view, but these can be discarded and deactivated permanently with one tap.

Read the text yourself or hear it rendered into speech

Daily Fiction will bring you a new composition every day, so you can rely on it to be a trusty companion while traveling or having breakfast. Unfortunately, you will not be able to access the texts from previous days, so one article per day is all you will get.

A neat feature of this app is the ability to render the written content aloud, using a text to speech engine, so you can safely plug your headphones and listen to the short story, just like it were an audio book.

In case you want to send your friends a link to the daily fiction, the application enables you to do so via SMS, email or through the social networks you subscribed to.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • provides a good pastime for fiction readers
  • can read the texts out loud

misses

  • users cannot read the past stories
  • very curious app that looks into too many system areas unrelated to its functionality
  • ad banners inside the GUI
  • no customization possibilities for the text (font, color, size, etc.)
Bottom Line
Design / UI7

The looks of this utility are decent, but they cannot be customized, while the ever-present advertisements and the occasional prompts also spoil the experience to a certain extent.

Function8

The feature set of this app is pretty much basic but still fairly good, even if it lacks some extra options like the ability to view the previously published short stories. The text to speech is a welcomed bonus that brings it some extra points.

Security5

Daily Fiction is rather intrusive, as it needs to access for no valid reason many secure areas of the system, like the phone dialer, location services, owner and phone identities or the multimedia libraries.

Battery8

The relatively small amount of energy required by this tool to function makes the battery usage remain well within moderate levels.

Price8

There are some misses about this application that make it lose some points, but it still provides some good reading material for any interested user.

Compatibility9

Specifically designed to be installed and run onto Windows Phone 7.5 and higher devices, this app doesn't have any special requirements.
