Twitch 3.2.2

Watch live gameplay footage, broadcast yourself, chat with players worldwide
Ever felt like the entire world had to see what you’d just done in a video game? Who hasn’t, right? A gamer’s life is filled with moments like these, and too bad for old timers such as myself that Twitch wasn’t around when I was kicking it in Mortal Kombat II.

Twitch is a revolutionary video-streaming service that puts someone’s gameplay footage on a screen near you in real time. You get to choose the game and even the player who is recording his / her action at that particular time, and you just hit play.

A never ending stream of gameplay

It may be hard to believe that people actually want to let their privacy be invaded like this, but it seems there are many who don’t have a problem giving others a glimpse of their personal space.

But that’s optional. Many just prefer to offer only their gameplay, full screen, leaving the followers to comment on the action in the chat box below. The UI is actually perfect for that. You chat in portrait mode while also watching the footage, and you ca stream the video full-screen in landscape mode.

The app enables you to follow games and see who’s broadcasting them, allowing thus a more desktop-like experience even when on mobile. You should also find some information about the broadcasters that are in the top or that you follow in the iOS 8 Notification Center.

Occasional racy content

As you’d expect, some choose to also put a web cam on their persona. Some use it as a video chat service, so you want to keep your kids away from Twitch. The age requirement (12+) is not appropriate, considering that some streams are downright raunchy.

However, you have the option to filter out these things if you’re the down to earth type.

Video quality, top gamers, channels

Unfortunately Twitch isn’t by far a flawless streaming service. It has frequent hiccups, which often hinders the viewing experience, especially if you’re watching console gameplay footage purely for the visuals.

You can view broadcasts from top games, players and events, and you can subscribe to support a certain player or party. Subscribing also involves paying the streamer some money (usually in the 5-bucks range).

The video browser layout is much like the App Store, so any iOS device owner will be instantly familiar with the navigation system in the app.

Bottom Line
Design / UI8

Well put together, looks a lot like the App Store.

Function9

Video quality isn’t always crystal, but the service performs very well overall. Also, there’s no requirement to sign up to watch gameplay, which is a massive bonus.

Security5

Twitch is certainly not appropriate for 12+ audiences, as the App Store listing would have you believe. It’s also a place where privacy is practically inexistent, if you’re not careful.

Battery7

Normal drainage levels for a video-playing/streaming app.

Price8

The app itself is free and has no ads (at least not the Google type), but there’s some paying involved for additional features, though not in the form of IAPs.

Compatibility8

Requires iOS 7 and works with all iDevices natively.

Editor's Review
VERY GOOD

An amazing service that’s bound to keep you stuck to your iDevice’s screen for hours.
