TV (FREE) 2.2

Stream hundreds of shows, cartoons, documentaries and more to your iDevice
Watching TV at home on the couch is so ‘90s. These days you just want to have your shows everywhere, and thanks to smartphones and tablets, you can. TV (FREE) from TapMedia does a pretty fair job at delivering television content to your iPhone or iPad for free.

Packed UI

You don’t get to pick your channels or anything like that, but TapMedia’s TV app is packed to the brim with content. Everything is displayed neatly with thumbnail previews, ordered by relevance, popularity or views, and the video quality is great most of the time.

The UI is what we’ve come to expect after reviewing most of TapMedia’s portfolio: an iOS 6-style job with thick graphics but intuitive navigation.

Content packed

Don’t expect any live programming either. It’s just bits and pieces from the most popular content on TV, but it’s enough to get your fix on the plane, on the train, on the toilet, etc.

You can favorite videos to find them again real easy, but you can’t store them for offline viewing, which is a huge bummer. You also need a pretty wicked WiFi connection for a good experience. Needless to point out, if you plan on using this one on a cellular connection, expect it to burn through your data allowance (and your bill, implicitly).

To compensate for not giving you the option to choose your channels, the upper-left menu tray holds categories (dubbed “channels” for some reason), including trailers, comedy, cooking, technology, sports, gaming, etc. It’s pretty useful as people generally have very different tastes (i.e. not everyone watches Kids TV).

All in all, you can use it to watch select TV content as streaming clips, but not live TV. Most videos load fast and display at a very good resolution and frame rate, with very few exceptions. Storing videos for offline viewing is not possible unfortunately, the playlist feature is broken, and you need good WiFi to use it.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7

A decent-looking app that’s still living in the iOS 6 days. The layout is simple and easy to understand, but a facelift is necessary for this day and age

Function7

You can watch select TV content as streaming clips, but not live TV

Security9

A passcode lock feature would be nice.

Battery7

Pretty decent power usage for such a graphically-intensive application. It’s surprising, considering that it hasn’t been optimized for the latest Apple firmware and hardware

Price9

Free with ads and the option to opt for ad removal via in-app purchase. The whole set of features is unrestricted

Compatibility9

Requires iOS 5.0 or newer and works natively on all iDevices, including iPads. The iPad version is actually more usable and far more enjoyable

Editor's Review
