Simple Player 1.1

When something is too simple, it’s probably useless too
Despite boasting well over one million different apps, the iTunes Store also packs a lot of junk unfortunately. Many apps are duplicates, while others are simply in-app purchase traps.  Some, however, are actually useless.

One such example is Simple Player by Alexandr Balyberdin. Which is a shame because the guy makes some pretty decent designs, including some apps we’ve scored very high on our scale.

Zero UI

Simple Player is actually so simple it has almost no interface at all. It just has one screen with playback controls so small you have to squint to see them, and a big, dark musical note icon in the middle. Another musical note appears at the top of the UI, with no immediate indication regarding its purpose. It basically doesn’t have any form of design. All except for that pretty light at the bottom that tracks the playback progression.

Just not worth using

Much like other useless players we’ve reviewed, Simple Player digs deep into your music library to fetch one track and make it readily playable. To add the rest of your library (which should be done automatically by Simple Player), you actually have to hit the musical note icon at the top, get in your iOS Music App, decide - without hesitation - which tracks you want to listen to, hit the Done button, and then continue your listening session.

With this much hassle, it’s enough to just reconsider using Apple’s own Music app. After all, half of Simple Music Player’s functionality is directly borrowed from Apple. It doesn’t do anything that your iPhone doesn’t already do by default, so it goes without saying that it’s not to be downloaded.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • pretty playback progress light that looks like a comet

misses

  • almost no interface whatsoever
  • UI elements are not even centered properly
  • useless as a music player
Bottom Line
Design / UI2

Doesn’t have any form of design, except for the blue light that tracks the playback progression. Some UI elements are not even centered properly

Function1

It’s useless, but it does play songs. One by one. To listen to a new one, you must first understand how it works.

Security10

It’s a non-app, and so it doesn’t have any features that could pose any threats

Battery9

Since it doesn’t do anything that your iPhone doesn’t already do, its power consumption is very limited.

Price10

We have to be fair. Simple Player isn’t any worse than it has to be. Other developers sell similar “goods” packed with ads and in-app purchases. Alexander offers Simple Player free of any nags and promotions. At least we can give it that.

Compatibility9

Works on almost all iDevices in existence, but there’s no iPad version. Not that anyone would want it.

Editor's Review
POOR

Only because it can actually play music
