Passible Password Manager 3.14

A password manager that does it all right, with one tiny exception
These days, much of our shopping is done online. Much of our living is done online as well, through social networks and other stuff that asks you for an account. You have forms to fill, passwords to enter, it’s always a hassle.

To simplify the process of living online, Clear Sky Apps LTD offers this app called Passible, which types in all your passwords and fills your forms for you, with just a few taps.

Password Manager now comes with a lifetime license, which means that if you bought the app once, you’re going to have it forever, without paying any additional fees and without a need for annual renewals.

Lightweight UI

Passible launches to a matrix-like animation that mixes up tiles of numbers and letters, greets you with “hello!” and asks you to punch in four-figure a passcode, something which all password managers should do, but don’t.

The user is then taken straight to the main UI where the developer offers a trio of examples to get the show on the road. Filling the fields with the required information is easy thanks to the lightweight interface. Most of the UI is very easy to read and follow.

Spot-on form filling

Like most password managers, Passible has a simple layout with options to create logins, web forms and cards. It even recognizes popular sites and locations and fills those fields appropriately as you type, saving you time.

You can choose the color of the form to remember it better, as well as the icon for sending it to the favorites bar that always sits at the top. The favorites tiles can be moved around.

There’s also a Safari web extension which can be used to fill your data in various forms while browsing.

In our testing, most of the automatic form filling and logins were spot on, but sometimes you’re required to perform some actions twice to log into an account. It isn’t clear why.

Built-in browser

The built-in browser doesn’t have a search bar or anything fancy. It just displays the site you’re navigating to, with the option to continue using it just like in a normal browser (tap on links, navigate to different pages, all in the same window).

IAPs to consider

The free version is very limited. A premium version can be purchased inside the app for $9.99 / €8.99. It offers multi device sync, automated online backup, automatic device wipe in case of theft, unlimited logins & cards entries, unlimited devices, and premium support from the developer. Worst of all, the subscription is annual.

Considering how many password managers are out there, some way cheaper than this one and with a lifetime subscription, there is very little incentive to actually buy Passible. But at least there are no ads.

Security

Here we have good news and bad news. The good news is that Passible immediately asks the user for a master passcode before entering any personal information. Some password managers and wallet apps don’t do that, and we usually give them low scores for it. Furthermore, Passible doesn’t ask you to enter the passcode again if you’ve been out of the app for less than 30 seconds. This makes life very easy.

The app comes with support for Touch ID, which means that you can even open the tool by using the security granted by your finger print. Most data can be exported out of the app or, if you wish, you can even import various details.

The bad news is that Passible stores your passwords in plain text and in plain sight. It isn’t clear why it does that, since the password is the one thing that nobody should be able to read out. A drop-down field would have been sufficient to display it when prompted. Unfortunately this is a major drawback, with all the syncing abilities (if you go pro) and the 30-second window that lifts passcode restrictions.

Hits & Misses

hits

  • simple, straightforward interface
  • thoughtful passcode lock before anything
  • color coding for quick browsing

misses

  • stores passwords in plain text and in plain sight
  • keeps many important features behind a paywall
Bottom Line
Design / UI8

Passible has a barebones UI, but that’s what makes it so easy to understand and use.

Function8

All the features work as expected and it does its job pretty well most of the time.

Security4

Passible stores your passwords in plain text and in plain sight. The least it could do is add one layer of security here (i.e. re-enter passcode to see passwords)

Battery9

Normal consumption levels.

Price8

$9.99 / €8.99 is pretty steep for the full shebang, while the free version offers limited features.

Compatibility8

Supports only iOS 7 devices and there’s a dedicated iPad version that takes full advantage of the bigger display. Considering the dwindling iOS 6 population, there’s no reason to tax it much.
