LINE: Free Calls & Messages 4.7.2

Line mixes texting, with voice and video chat, as well as social networking
Social networking and messaging tools have been mixing and mingling for the past few years. One of the apps that tries to bring the two together is Line (I refuse to "yell" by writing it in all-caps), an app that is filed under the social networking banner, but which is more of a mobile messaging tool than anything else.

More specifically, this is a messaging app with a little bit of social networking flavor. The app allows you to chat with friends, but also to call them using the Internet connection. It’s also possible to video call your friends, which is quite nice.

Text, call, video chat

When it comes to messaging your buddies, you can text them like you would in Whatsapp, for instance, send them pictures, videos or even add in voice messages. You can also send them contact info and to share your location with them, which makes use of your phone’s GPS.

As mentioned, you may also call them up and video chat with them, which is particularly nice if you don’t get to see them too often.

Line comes with an extra feature that we’ve rarely seen, which is the ability to edit your messages. For instance, you can delete them from view, even though this won’t alter the way your buddies see said messages. You can even forward them to other people or save them as posts.

Wanna-be social network

This is where the social networking part of Line comes up. The app comes with a timeline that you might find particularly familiar. You can write in it, add photos or some of the famous stickers, which, once more, remind us of Facebook and its Messenger app.

You can even add things to your friends’ pages, like their posts and comment on them. Line lets you set up groups that you can chat with, which is nice. Also, friend invites to the app can be made via email or SMS, while adding people can also be done by scanning a QR code or shaking your phone, which will have the app seeking for anyone nearby who has Line installed.

Purchases for miles

All in all, this is a nice app that can definitely go over as a messaging tool, one that mixes text with voice and video calls. What it can’t exactly claim, however, is that this is a social network of any type. Furthermore, the incredibly long list of things you can purchase within the app, varying from sticker packages to themes will put off many people.

These are bought with the help of some Line coins, which cost about €1,79 for 100 or €3,59 for 200 of them. Considering that your regular theme costs 150 coins and the sticker packages about 100 coins, you can get a pretty clear picture of how things are going.

There’s also the issue of this app’s rating which was set at 4+. This is a bit of an issue given how graphic some of these stickers are. In the free packs included with the app there are quite a few that will even make a grownup raise an eyebrow , such as the ones we’ve included in the gallery. Not to mention that the social network element should increase the age limit on its own.

misses

  • tries to do too much

Bottom Line
Design / UI8

The app looks nice, but it’s a bit too complicated due to the desire to just throw in every feature under the sun

Function7

Line delivers on the messaging promise, but not so much on the social networking part

Security7

The app requires quite a bit of your information, raging from phone number, to physical location and so on.

Battery8

The app will take a hit on your battery life if you use it a lot, especially for calling and video chats

Price7

The app may be free to use, but there’s an entirely too long list of things that will cost you a pretty penny

Compatibility10

Line requires only iOS 5.0 to work, which means anyone can use it

Editor's Review
VERY GOOD

This is a nice app, but a bit too crowded. Give it a go if you have the time
