Jasmine - YouTube Client 1.1.1
A decent YouTube client for your iPhone or iPad, but not a special one
Google’s official YouTube app is not something that works for everyone. That’s why there are dozens, if not hundreds of alternatives out there in the App Store for iPhone and iPad users.
One thing that bugs me personally about the official YouTube app is that there is no way to search for another video without sending the current one down to the bottom of the display. What’s worse is that it keeps playing. If you hit stop and then try to send it down, the UI is slow to respond.
A good alternative, but not ideal
I’m always on the hunt for a better YouTube app, but unfortunately I can’t say that Jasmine is what I’m looking for. It’s a lot simpler than Google’s official client, I can tell you that right from the start. But it’s not very visual.
In fact, it begins with a list of options and all kinds of things to select. Most of the sections don’t contain anything because you haven’t logged on with your Google account yet. Even when you do, you still have to start adding things in order to fill them out. It’s a real waste of space and time or, as Einstein would call it, space-time.
Standard video interface
However, one thing I can truly appreciate about Jasmine is that you get a standard playback interface. No annoying related videos, no comments, just the video and the playback controls. You can efficiently stop and exit the video and start looking for something else without having to use unfamiliar gestures that might sometimes bring up Notification Center by accident. Yes, I’m looking at you, Google YouTube!
Free of charge with the option to chip in
Developer Morrissey Exchange Pty Ltd. doesn’t beg for your in-app purchase and doesn’t feature ads in the free version of the app, something they stress in the Pro Upgrade section of the app.
The Pro version adds parental controls and other small stuff, but most of the functionality is unrestricted in the free version. Also, Jasmine doesn’t display nag screens about the Pro Upgrade.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
Good design, but kind of cold and uninviting. Instead of starting with the videos, it starts with something that looks like a settings panel. |
Function7
Delivers YouTube on the spot, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Just a decent alternative to the official client. |
Security8
Your Google login comes with the usual privacy concerns. But we haven’t seen anything too concerning. |
Battery7
Normal consumption levels for a video streamer and player. |
Price9
Most of the offerings are free and there are no ads, but the developer does advertise a Pro version for $1.99. |
Compatibility9
Works on all iDevices and only requires iOS 6. |
Editor's Review
VERY GOOD
A decent YouTube client, but it’s not exactly special.
