Headspace wants you to start meditating a few minutes every day
Getting some time for yourself can be difficult at times. With how much time you spend at your job or at school, how long you spend in traffic and all the work you have to take care even when you get home, sometimes that’s more of a dream than something achievable.
Headspace is an iOS app that seeks to help you find some time for yourself, time for you to meditate. The tool uses meditation and mindfulness techniques that will, the devs say, help train your mind for a healthier, happier and more enjoyable life.
I don’t know if the end result will truly be along these lines, but I will say that after going through the introductory ten minute session, I was definitely more relaxed. Well, alright then, I almost fell asleep with the ear-buds in, sitting cross-legged on the floor; getting some peace and quiet.
As you start using the app you’ll be on the Take 10 programme, which is free to use. These lessons will teach you the basics of meditation in just about ten minutes each day. A calming voice will give you various instructions as you go through the lesson, telling you to how to sit, what to focus on, to close and open your eyes, to breathe deeply and so on.
If you enjoy the program you can then stay on with Headspace and get access to hundreds of hours of content, including guided and unguided meditation sessions, ranging from 2 to 60 minutes. Subscriptions are available for a different lengths of time, such as monthly, yearly, for two years or forever. The most popular seems to be the yearly one where the cost per month reaches $7,99.
The tool lets you set up reminders for you to take the time to meditate, but can also send you messages to keep you “mindful throughout the day” by buzzing you up to five times per day.
The app provides some progress stats, telling you what the average duration of the meditation session was, how many of these you want from and how much time you’ve spent in total since you started using the app. You’ll also be able to see how many other people are using Headspace to meditate when you do.
Overall this is a pretty cool app and I can see what the buzz is all about. After all, it’s important to tend to your mind just as you tend to your body and taking just a few minutes out of your day to meditate can do you good in the end.
