GPS navigation BE-ON-ROAD 3.10
Ugly design
GPS navigation BE-ON-ROAD is basically just an interface for various OpenStreetMaps that you can download for free. The UI is extremely bad. It uses a blue theme that burns through your retina and the fonts are so small that you’ll have to squint to read something on the display if you’re planning to mount the phone on your car’s dashboard. The maps themselves are primitive.
There’s a night-mode theme that makes life a little easier in this app. The keyboard is virtually unusable with the device mounted on the car’s dashboard.
A good tool for reaching POIs
Despite looking pretty bad, the app does a fair job at pinpointing POIs and other stuff. You simply visit the main menu, select POIs, tap Near Current Position, select something from the list (leisure, services, culture etc) and then select your venue. The map instantly goes into navigation mode and you’re off.
Although plenty, the rest of its features are sub-par. Much of the functionality is also crippled because of the bad (and sometimes unresponsive) UI. And let’s not even mention the god-awful keyboard.
The setup process is also very counter-intuitive. And it seems you have to decide carefully what maps you want to download because once your in one, it’s hard to get out.

Bottom Line
Design / UI2
God-awful design and sometimes unresponsive UI. The fonts are too small, the maps are extremely choppy, and the blue theme hurts the eye. |
Function7
Gets the job done if you’re looking for POIs near you. It’s got all the navigation features you could ask for, but they’re all sub-par, mainly because of the bad UI. The maps themselves are not all accurate. |
Security9
Because it works offline, there aren’t many security concerns, but it does use location services and requires an account for the built-in messenger feature. |
Battery6
Drains the battery fairly fast because of continued use of GPS. If you close it, the app continues running in background until the existing route is canceled or the last waypoint is reached. |
Price8
It uses OpenStreetMaps, so it’s free all the way. But it does include some paid perks, such as commercial maps with higher quality road network, more precise routes, a larger database of house numbers, ZIP code lookup, support for navigation based on traffic, and much more. |
Compatibility9
Supports iOS 5.0 and upwards and has an iPad-ready version as well. |
It looks really bad but it’s good for finding POIs)
