Commander Compass Lite 3.7.7

A GPS toolkit for outdoor activities, off-road navigation
With iOS already packing a pretty decent compass app, there’s hardly a need for any third party solutions, right? Wrong. If you really want some readings, go with Pavel Ahafonau’s Commander Compass Lite. All you need is the free version.

Looks like a fighter jet gauge

Commander Compass operates in 3D to show real-time object positions, information and directions overlaid on maps or a simple kaki background. Using it feels like you’re in the cockpit of a fighter jet. You won’t even know what to do with all those readings, unless you’re a pilot or something. The thing simply looks radical!

There are not many words that can describe it, so we’ll just move on with the features.

The app’s gyrocompass has been improved in a recent update. In fact, this can be used as a primary mode. In the gyrocompass mode, you’ll notice that the magnetic sensor is always referenced until there’s a manual adjustment to be made regarding the direction. This has to be done with the two finger sliding gesture, which is quite useful and easy to handle. So, unless you adjust things manually, the app will act as a magnetic compass that’s assisted by the gyrocompass.

A simple compass app, a great navigation tool

In our testing, Commander Compass has proved to be a very accurate navigation tool. In fact, it strikes us as the essential GPS toolkit for the great outdoors, packing a milspec compass with maps, gyrocompass, tactical GPS receiver, waypoint tracker, speedometer, altimeter, gyro horizon, and even a coordinate converter.

You can save custom places and waypoints, use it to navigate precisely to these waypoints in the future, pinpoint stuff on maps (Google’s), get detailed GPS info, measures distances, angles, the works! You can even track the positions of stars, the Sun and the Moon with arc second precision.

Bottom Line
Design / UI10

The most modern-looking compass we’ve ever seen. Max score for making us feel like Tom Cruise.

Function9

All of the above, plus a really detailed settings panel that lets you adjust everything to the micron. Really well thought out and amazingly accurate.

Security9

The app has more ways than one to send your location over the web. But only if you want.

Battery7

Drains a fair amount of power, but we expected this.

Price9

Free with ads and a prompt to get the full version, which does even more things (if that’s possible).

Compatibility9

iOS 6.1 means almost all iDevices are compatible, and even even has a native iPad version too.
