Finally, a music player that delivers on promise and doesn’t cost a dime

You have to scour the App Store to eventually find a decent MP3 downloader, but luckily we make it our job to find these apps and report them to you. Our latest quest has landed Free Music Download for SoundCloud on our iDevices and we’re eager to spread the word about its awesomeness.

iOS-inspired

Developer FENG XIA HAN took cues from Apple’s mobile operating system and gave his music player a very cool flat UI with translucency and iconography ripped from iOS itself. That’s not unlawful in the App Store. If anything, it’s a compliment.

With a design to kill for and such surprising simplicity and focus on the music, it’s hard not to praise its creator. Kudos and may the rest of the developer community learn something from this app.

One of the best music downloaders on iTunes

Normally we expect any MP3 browser/downloader to be crappy, but this one simply shines. There are no settings to tweak whatsoever, you just browse the trending section or go hunt for a song you know and hit the + (plus) button. The track is instantly downloaded to your Songs area where it becomes ready for offline playback anytime, anywhere.

It fetches everything that matches your query, and doesn’t leave out any key words, providing maximum discoverability of tracks. Despite being dubbed a SoundCloud downloader, it’s likely able to find audio outside the boundaries of SoundCloud.

It even includes a nice timer that puts the app to sleep at a predetermined deadline. You get playlist creation, suggestions as you type, full album artwork (when available), management features, filtering by genre, repeat and shuffle options, and top charts. Honestly, you could ask for more. Did we mention it’s completely free?

Zero price tag

Yes, it does display an occasional ad and yes the developer will kindly ask you for a review. But it’s a bargain considering the benefits that come from this app. FENG didn’t even bother to make a Pro version or suggest an in-app purchase. What you see is what you get.

Design / UI10 A very cool flat UI with translucency and iconography "borrowed" from iOS	Function9 It may not be perfect for everyone, but if you’re looking for a reliable app that fetches you MP3s from the web, this is it. It also plays music in the background, non stop.	Security10 Since it doesn’t integrate with any social networks and (only downloads) never uploads any data, Free Music Download is airtight on your end.
Battery9 It’s well optimized for iOS and doesn’t drain the battery more than necessary.	Price9 Displays an occasional ad but it’s a bargain considering the benefits.	Compatibility9 Supports iOS 6.0 and upwards, and there’s even a dedicated iPad version with a much bigger UI and the same set of features.
