Free Music Download Manager & Player for SoundCloud 1.0.2
Despite being offered as a free app, Free Music Download Manager & Player for SoundCloud doesn’t do much without paying to lift the restrictions. Let’s look at it from all sides and conclude if it’s worth your time.
iOS-inspired design
Featuring a flat design inspired heavily from Apple’s iOS 7, Free Music Download Manager opens to a search bar that allows you to instantly find and list all available songs with a given name. You’d be surprised how many tracks have the same name, and that’s only what you can find in SoundCloud.
The tabs below let you access favorites, saved songs, playlists and settings. In its free form, the app displays ads quite a lot, and the UI isn’t very responsive at times. The player interface is nice and sleek, featuring a record and simple playback buttons, along with some sharing options.
Requires in-app purchase
The free version lets you favorite and save six tracks for testing. It’s hardly enough for audiophiles, but it may do the trick for those people who like to look up stuff on SoundCloud. The Favorite (star) button doesn’t provide any visual feedback when you select a track for downloading, but it does work.
In the player section, you can play, pause, go back or skip to a new song, share songs on social networks, choose to repeat or shuffle your tracks, and of course control the volume and progress.
When you hit the 6-track limit, the app begins to display various alerts, such as “song invalid,” or an ad that encourages you to buy the full version. The price is $9.99 / €8.99 for the full feature set which seems mostly comprised of themes, rather than audio / playback features. Occasional ads for other apps are also displayed on a regular basis. The experience can become frustrating because of this.
Normally such an app wouldn’t even deserve attention, but it does fetch songs from SoundCloud pretty well, making it a lot easier than having to log into SoundCloud. You just search and then hit favorite, and the song is yours for the keeping. But like we said, it only works for six tracks in the free version. If you’re serious about your music, you’ll probably need something else. Song management (folder creation, etc.) is very counter-intuitive.

Bottom Line
Design / UI6
Free Music Download Manager doesn’t look all that good, despite being inspired by iOS 7. There is little visual feedback to your taps, and the constant display of ads is annoying. |
Function6
You just search and then hit favorite, and the song is yours for the keeping. But six songs is just not enough. |
Security8
Has ads targeted based on your location / language. |
Battery8
No abnormal activity, performs relatively well on multiple device types. |
Price5
The free version is certainly very limited, while the full app is ridiculously expensive, considering what the developer unlocks in exchange for your $9.99 / €8.99. |
Compatibility6
YI ZHENG says it requires iOS 5.1, but the app is not universal, meaning it only displays natively on iPhone and iPod touch. Not that you’d need it on your iPad anyway. |
Not really worth your buck
