Field Trip 1.4.0
The app comes with a simple interface, albeit a bit dated, making it look more like a notebook with dated-looking paper than a modern app. Nonetheless, the design is plenty intuitive to make it easy for everyone to get around.
Location and notification
Field Trip asks that you allow it to send you notification and for it to get access to your location. Both of these will be used to notify you when you’re near to an interesting location. The app allows you to set just how frequently you want to get notifications (frequent, occasional, off) so it doesn’t become extremely annoying. You can always edit this feature from the Notifications menu at a later time if you feel like you’re getting too many or too few of these.
The app makes no secret about the fact that it determines your phone’s location and shares it with Google in order to serve personalized alerts to you, so you at least know what you’re getting into.
It’s possible to log in with your Google account, or to skip this step altogether. If you choose the latter, you can’t choose favorite locations, but other than that the app is pretty open towards allowing you to be anonymous if you so desire.
On top of providing you information about the nice places you can find nearby, Field Trip can also give you spoken descriptions and titles. This feature can be turned off or only enabled when you have your headset on.
Discover Field Trip
Field Trip comes with a few tabs at the bottom of the page. The “Map” one is pretty self-explanatory and gives you access to your location on Google Maps, letting you see the streets that you can find in your immediate vicinity.
The Nearby tab provides you with a few cool places around you, varying from hip shops, to open buildings and other interesting locations. Tapping on the notebook-like icon at the top of the app will give you access to a list of interests. You can check out locations that are on the app’s list due to their architecture or history, you can look for places that fit under the “Lifestyle” umbrella, restaurants and pubs or museums and artsy places. Alternatively, you can have the app look for “cool & unique” places, as well as for “offers & deals”.
Once you pick any of these, you’ll find a full list of cool places that you can scan. They’re rather long, however, and you might be better off just waiting to see which of these you end up near of during your walks.
It’s possible to check out information about the locations you like. You’ll get access to pictures, the date it was published, and a few other options, such as one to add it to the favorites list, to share it with Google+ or other networks and so on.
This is a rather interesting app and although it may not look like much at the first look, it comes with plenty of features and information that you could find interesting. This is truly a great app when you visit new places so you can find places that might not be in the trip guide.
