Compass 42 2.1

A simple compass app that uses a real-life representation of a compass
You really don’t need to download a third-party compass app with Apple already offering one of its own built right inside iOS, but if you prefer a fresh interface, you can go visit the App Store as there are plenty of compass apps in there to choose from.

Simple (copied) design

Developer DOUBLE U s.r.o. sells this simplistic navigation utility called Compass 42 (for some reason), whose sole purpose is to guide you to the right direction. It’s got a furnished-wood theme and its displays a faithful representation of a 15th century compass right smack in the middle of its UI. It’s an old design that has been iterated dozens of times, maybe hundreds.

Its calibration screen is identical to that of Apple’s, making it seem as if DOUBLE U copied the original iOS Compass app design. Furthermore, the UI looks a lot like Apple’s old Compass app (from iOS 6).

Unreliable (i.e. useless)

Sadly, we just can’t recommend Compass 42. It shows different results than Apple’s own Compass app and other compass apps we tested. All except Compass 42 can agree rapidly where North is. Compass 42, however, has trouble deciding on its readings even after the phone is laid flat on the table. Considering that its core function is unreliable, it’s pretty clear that it needs to be avoided. Also, for some reason, the on-screen compass reacts to touch.

Bottom, line, the core functionality is not 100% trustworthy, making it somewhat useless (considering iOS already has a built-in compass ready to go at all times). There’s also bug that lets you do away with the ads by tapping on the “no ads” icon, then choosing “no, thank you.”

Hits & Misses

hits

  • nice toy for whomever wants to touch the compass animation and see how it reacts (kids, cats, etc)

misses

  • unreliable readings
  • pesky ads inside the UI
Bottom Line
Design / UI0

Ancient design, with some elements copied from Apple’s own Compass apps.

Function0

Core functionality is not 100% reliable, making it somewhat useless

Security0

Doesn’t pose any security issues, but the ads are clearly targeted based on your location / language

Battery0

Doesn’t drain the battery, but the ads will suck extra juice.

Price0

Considering it’s just a lousy compass that doesn’t even provide accurate readings, has ads AND in-app purchases, this is not what you’d expect from an app advertised as free.

Compatibility0

At least it works on all devices that support iOS 5. No iPad version, though (not that anyone would want it on their tablet). And it’s not optimized for iOS 7 (not even for iOS 6).
