Nicely designed UI with a responsive display
Instead of shopping for a phonometer and wasting money, try using Sound Meter app. The user-interface is really intuitive, if not simplistic. The main tools are at hand, making it easy to calibrate the meter, adjust settings or take a screenshot. Also, the app displays line charts and comes with instructions of use.
Real-time measurements and calibration
The app displays a meter with real-time values of sound that increase as the noise level goes up or down. The values range from 0 to 120 decibels and are calculated using the phone's built-in microphone.
In order to reset the values, you just need to hold your finger on the middle of the screen. Calibration is also done easily, simply scroll through the values and set them. You can go up or down 40 dB, however it depends on the device you're using.
Categorization and line charts for sound levels
In addition to measurements and calibration, the app also comes with a categorization of sound levels, something which classical phonometers don't provide. All values are featured in a line chart that measures sound levels over a span of 30 seconds.
So if you were curious of how loud an ambulance siren is, you can calculate noise levels as it drives by.
Moreover, all values are categorized from the quietest of 20 dB or the sound of rustling levels and ticking watches, to 180 dB which is the maximum decibel level for a space shuttle lift-off. The app highlights the sound level around you. Also, more features like line-chart duration and level notification can be unlocked if you upgrade to premium.
