Google Goggles 1.9.4

Make your camera identify famous paintings, landmarks, barcodes or QR codes
The developers from Google created an app for phones and tablets, that uses the camera to scan various objects and provides search results and further information on the items. The cleverly-named Google Goggles app, is useful for when you need to identify objects fast or translate short bits of text.

It recognizes a large variety of objects and paintings

The GUI is neat, simply use your camera to snap a picture of the painting and Google provides you with the artist's name and a description of the item. Further information is available in the results bar. You can set the camera to enhance the image and save it to your phone's gallery. In addition, the app comes with several instructions, tips and tricks for better usage.

Goggles recognizes paintings, landmarks, products and popular images, as long as Google can find them in it's database. It also scans and reads text in various languages, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and provides a somewhat approximate translation.

Scan barcodes and QR codes

One great thing about this app is that it scans barcodes and QR codes, as well as products like clothing and provides information and similar suggestions from the web. You can also add contacts by scanning business cards, so you don't have to bother with adding names and phone numbers to your phone's agenda. Another great use for this app is solving Sudoku puzzles, simply scan the puzzle and Goggles provides you with the solution.

Great idea, poor execution

One thing is for sure about this app, it's not a miracle worker. The idea is quite clever, you'll be tempted to use this app for almost any object around you and especially at museums, as it helps you learn more information about anything that surrounds you. However, try scanning simple objects like a fork or a spoon and Goggles can't simply identify it, providing you with suggestions of pants or other clothing items.
