Advanced Task Killer 2.0.3B203

A quick way to close all the running apps and free up memory
As you may know already, in Android there are no buttons to close running apps as it happens in the case of desktop operating systems, with the exception of programs where developers have implemented this functionality themselves. Instead, Android keeps apps running in the background and automatically closes unused ones when memory is low. While this approach should work, on low-end devices with limited RAM you may experience sluggish performance when lots of programs are opened. Another problem is that some of the apps may be consuming unnecessary power and, with no way to close them, battery life will be affected. If you are familiar with these situations, it may be worth checking out Advanced Task Manager.

Outdated interface

One quick glance at Advanced Task Manager and the first thing you will notice is the terribly outdated interface. But, as looks don't matter as much as the provided functionality in the case of such a tool, you will probably get over this. Despite the ugly visuals, using the app is as easy as it gets. The main screen shows a list of the running apps and lets you uncheck the ones you want to keep open. To kill the apps, you only need to tap one button and that's it. For added convenience, a widget allows you to free up memory right from the home screen.

Useful app that can be configured to start at boot

Advanced Task Manager can also be used as a set-and-forget solution. You can configure the software to automatically start at boot and to automatically kill running apps once a few hours or when the screen goes off. In case you want specific apps to keep running in the background, you can add them to an ignore list to make sure they are not closed.

It is worth noting that in newer versions of Android, some of the apps cannot be killed. Services and system apps are automatically restarted by the OS and they have to be manually force closed, but this is not the program's fault. These apps are shown in green and can be hidden from the list from the program's settings.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7

The visual aspect of the app leaves to be desired, though the developers state that an UI overhaul is in the works. On the other part, using the app is straightforward and fast.

Function8

The Android OS does a good job of managing memory and generally the use of task killers is not recommended. However, there are times when apps running in the background may use GPS to determine your location, for example, draining battery fast.

Security9

Advanced Task Manager requires internet access to display ads. The permissions to close apps and to run at startup are self-explanatory.

Battery10

Even when auto kill is on, the impact on battery life is barely noticeable. Moreover, as it can help you save power by closing battery-killing apps, Advanced Task Manager scores top points in this area.

Price9

Advanced Task Manager is free and displays ads in the main screen. The Pro version removes the advertisements.

Compatibility9

Compatible with OS versions all the way down to Donut, Advanced Task Manager can be run a wide range of devices.
