Skype
Same old UI as the desktop version
The interface for the Skype app doesn't come with anything new compared to the desktop version. It's the same old blue layout that we've all gotten used to, which can be an advantage considering that it's makes it easier to navigate for regular users.
The application comes with some instructions for new users, so that they can get the hang of it fast, but before they can start making calls users must register with an account, which takes only minutes to do.
Next, the app will display account information and your profile which you can edit easily by adding a picture and even a mood. There's also the option of making your profile visible only to contacts that you want or adding a status to your profile.
Make calls, send messages and share pictures
Skype is widely used for making video-calls to various people all around the world. The call and texts aren't charged and are made via internet connection, so both users must have a solid connection for the video to work.
You can adjust video quality in case you feel that the connection is lacking and might interrupt your call. Still, even with the fastest wireless internet, Skype had some trouble with ensuring a flowing video call. The app also lets you send photos to friends even if they're offline.
Create group conversations
Sending text message is quite easy, simply tap on the username and start writing. The app provides users with plenty of writing tools and you can even send files or pictures within messages.
The app also lets you add actual phone numbers to call your contacts. Still, it comes with a warning stating that emergency calls cannot be made with Skype. The app makes it easy to create conversations and add as many participants as you like.
Skype also provides you with the option of calling mobiles and landlines around the world, but for that you'd need to buy rates. There's a list of rates for each country and they start at 1.00$ per month, so quite affordable.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The app sports the same old Skype interface that we've gotten used to over the years. It could use an upgrade seeing how so many other messaging apps are emerging. |
Function7
It performs well, but video calls might lag or get interrupted even if you're using a fast internet connection. |
Security7
It does need online registration and you might want to think twice if you wish to sync some of your contacts with the app. Also, Skype peaks into all areas of your phone. |
Battery6
Needless to say that the app takes a toll on your battery resources, especially when making video or regular calls. |
Price8
While the service itself is free, users must pay to make calls to mobiles and landlines. There's a whole list of rates for all locations around the world. |
Compatibility8
The developer didn't mention Android versions required for this app, but it should work both on tablets and smartphones. |
It has been around for quite some time, but it's still a great voice and messaging service.
