Default App Manager Lite 2.4
Intuitive user-interface with many options
Default App Manager sports a simple interface with only two tabs. One of them lists installed apps and allows you to clear the defaults. The other displays various categories, such as audio or email, and lets you select the default apps to handle them. In case a category doesn't have a default associated program, you can assign one from within Default App Manager.
Manage apps on your phone
Files of different types are handled by different programs. An image file requires a viewer, a movie needs a video player, a link is opened in a browser, etc. When there are more than one apps suited for the job, a dialogue box will ask you which of them you want to use.
After selecting one of them, you can choose to open the file in the respective app once or every time. In case you choose the latter option, the app will be set as the default handler for files of that type and the dialogue won't be displayed again.
If you change your mind later, you can undo this by going to the Android's app manager screen in settings, finding the app in the list, tapping on it and then pressing the “Clear defaults” button. Default App Manager is a tool that should makes this process faster.
An app that partially works
All good in theory, but does it really work? In my case it didn't, at least partially. After selecting Firefox as the default browser, the next time I tried to open a link from a Google search result, the dialogue box still popped up asking me which app to use.
For the Video category, the app worked, but only for an mp4 file, trying to play an mkv showing the dialogue yet again. However, choosing to have text files opened in Ghost Commander by default worked, so your mileage might vary.
The tab that allows you to clear the default apps is not especially useful either. Selecting the Clear button for an app takes you to Android's app management screen from where you have to select the “Clear defaults” options yourself, which isn't much of a time saver. Moreover, it would have been nice if the tab hadn't listed apps not set as default handlers for anything.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The user interface is simple, with ads displayed at the bottom of the screen. Not much to see here. |
Function5
Some of the functionality provided by the app is broken. Clearing the defaults isn't much quicker than going to Android's settings. |
Security5
The app requires permission to determine your phone number and device IDs. This, coupled with full network access, presents security risks. |
Battery7
Default App Manager is the kind of application that you won't use that often, so battery usage should be insignificant. This is not the case however. |
Price8
The app is free with ads, which can be removed by purchasing the Pro version. |
Compatibility7
The app is compatible with both smartphones and tablets. The minimum OS required is 4.0.3, so the app can be used on many devices. |
