Hidden Camera 4.2.0.0
Windows Phone users can enlist the help of a special application called Hidden Camera that was created exactly for such purposes, as its name clearly suggests.
Plain interface designed for ease of use
The utility has a simple GUI, that is displayed only in landscape mode as it doesn't readjust when the device is held in a different position, unless you leave the home screen of the app. The commands are all at hand, in the same screen, so you won't have to go through any menus to bring them up.
The preview are is limited to about two thirds of the phone's screen, but that should be enough to find a good position for the camera and then go in the hidden mode. Every now and then, a prompt to evaluate the application will appear when Hidden Camera starts.
Record videos and upload them on the fly
This utility is very easy to work with, so as soon as you decide on the place where you want to put the phone to record the video, you can switch off the preview, start the recording and activate the hidden mode. While the screen goes black, the buttons of the handheld will remain lit up, which can be a telltale sign for anyone seeing it, so it's best to conceal them to ensure complete anonymity.
The video files are saved automatically and their length can be fixed to any desired value up to 10 minutes, with increments of half a minute. Sharing the recordings is possible through OneDrive, Dropbox or an FTP server, but there is a 50 MB per file limit for uploading files these cloud storage services.

Bottom Line
Design / UI6
The interface is far from being attractive and the fact that everything is well organized and easy to reach is one of the few advantages it has in this respect. The prompts for rating and reviewing the application are less intrusive than the ad banners displayed by other apps, so they are only a minor setback. |
Function8
The ability to record video from the built-in camera with the screen blackened is a neat idea, but it still needs a tiny bit of work because with the buttons remaining illuminated someone could easily realize what is happening behind the darkened display. |
Security7
Despite it being merely a video recording application, Hidden Camera requires access to the phone dialer as well as to the owner and phone identities. |
Battery8
The app is friendly with the system resources, as the battery usage is kept low while the screen goes black. However, the live preview, playing and uploading the captured files will need a bit more power, which increases the overall consumption. |
Price10
Considering the fact that users don't have to pay anything to use all the features of the application, this tool is a bargain for anyone. |
Compatibility9
Most devices powered by Windows Phone 7.5 and higher will be able to handle this app seamlessly, provided there is a screen resolution of at least 480x800 pixels. |
