File Manager Free (FileSoft) 1.2.0.0

A plain app that anyone can use to view all the files stored onto a Windows Phone handset
Keeping track of documents, songs, photos or videos stored on the phone can be less easy than one would expect, especially if the right utility is not at hand. For Windows Phone users, the choices are not too many, but there are some handy apps that can fit the bill.

File Manager Free is a utility that aims to help you get to know the contents of your phone and check out in a straightforward manner all the stored files.

Common interface focused on functionality

This app comes with a decent GUI, pretty simple by modern standards, as it has a decent wallpaper on the background, but the file and folder icons look a bit rough around the edges. Fortunately, moving around the stored files and inside directories is smooth and without glitches.

There are some previews, but only for image files and these come in the form of some small and square thumbnails. The navigation is not as intuitive as you would expect because there are no commands to tap on in order to go back and forth, so you have to press the arrow button on your handset to move backwards and tap the folder icon to open that directory.

Browse and view the files stored on the phone or on an attached SD card

Even if the name suggests this app is for managing content, it merely acts as a viewer that peeks into the local or SD card folders to show you the stored music and image files. It doesn't support any other type of file at this time and there are no commands for handling the items it can recognize.

The folders are visible no matter where they are stored, on the phone or on an SD card and the app reports the number of items included in each container, without taking into consideration, though, subfolders and the files stored in there. To make things worse, when taping an audio file inside File Manager Free, the playback begins immediately, but there are no controls for as much as stopping the sound reproduction.

  • when audio playback starts there are no commands for stopping it from File Manager Free
Bottom Line
Design / UI3

The background image is the best part of the whole thing, as it has a nice look to it. The other graphics inside the app are not as polished and on top of that, there are ads inside the interface.

Function1

Deceiving by name, File Manager Free cannot manage anything at present and functions only as a file viewer, limited to pictures and songs.

Security6

Given the fact that it does nothing more than to show pictures and music tracks, this app seeks to access some locations it shouldn't be peeking into, like the phone and owner identity or the phone dialer.

Battery8

There is one good thing about this utility and it is the power consumption which is average to low, so the battery is safe from being exhausted while this app is running.

Price4

It's a good thing that users are not charged for this application, but the advertisements and complete lack of features hardly make it a bargain, as there are other tools far more better equipped.

Compatibility7

The user base for File Manager Free is limited to those who own a Windows Phone 8 and above powered device, while the screen resolutions it needs are the standard ones.
