Butterfly Spotter 2.3
For those passionate about butterflies, having a good reference book at hand when going out in the fields is a must and if you are one such hobbyist, there is an app called Butterfly Spotter that could come in handy when in continental Europe or the British Isles.
Simple and unadorned GUI, focused on practicality
This utility comes with a plain look, featuring a handful of tiles with beautiful images on them set against a completely black background. The arrangement of the application's sections and of the information contained inside is pretty well-thought, offering a convenient placement of the commands and ease of use.
Accessing the various modules and opening the pages with butterfly information have some noticeable delays, but browsing through the article content is seamless. Once in a while you will receive a reminder that prompts to rate the app.
Consult the catalog to recognize the butterflies and add them to your personal collection
Each time you encounter a butterfly you do not recognize immediately you can try to identify by accessing the dedicated section of the utility and using the special filters. Thus, you can check the "Flight-Time Filter" box to narrow the search to the butterflies known to fly in the current time of the year and then pick the insect's size, wing and secondary colors.
Browsing the built-in database is easy to do and you can have the butterflies sorted in alphabetical order by their common or scientific name. The personal collection contains the butterflies and moths you have spotted in the wild and added from their individual pages using the "Catch" command.

Bottom Line
Design / UI7
The interface has a decent look and is pretty well organized so as to allow users to find and access the information in a simple manner. The lack of customization options, the delays in loading the pages and the occasional prompts are the main drawbacks in this area. |
Function7
The app offers a good variety of butterfly and moth species, but the catalog is only useful for a small region of the world as it is limited to the varieties that can be found in Europe. An advantage is that Butterfly Spotter works without needing an Internet connection. |
Security8
The application needs, for some reason, to access the location services and the phone identity, even if these seem to have nothing to do with its functionality. |
Battery9
The barely noticeable power consumption keeps the battery usage at low and very low levels all the time this utility is up and running. |
Price8
This app is a really useful helper, but, unfortunately, it is suitable only for those traveling or living in continental Europe and Great Britain, so the overall value decreases a bit. |
Compatibility8
Windows Phone users with devices powered by version 8 and above of the operating system will be able to run this application without any extra requirements. |
